Mark can opine with more specificity but generally the cabo falso wind shadow has a somewhat predictable diurnal pattern.  So, its more about timing your approach with the right strategy.  For example, it would be pretty risky bet to come close and cut the corner at 1PM.  The NAM can show the diurnal patterns.

Boy did Rio crush it staying close to shore relative to Pyewacket.  They were deep 24 hours ago, and now they almost even.  Rio is probably faster in the light stuff, no?

Pyewacket is sailing along at a leisurely 13.1 knots as of 8:41AM PDT. Still a fair ways to go as the entire fleet hits the breaks under softening pressure.

Fun race exciting rip down the Baja peninsula. Had.go round the outside to avoid the worst of the Cabo shadow only to get nailed by the early morning approach to Banderas Bay. Four hours lead going in one hour and a few by the time the late morning sea breeze carrried us in.
