Went out and watched the start, when Puma tacked and accelerated it was like a power boat going up on plane, amazing. Also noticed how small Merlin looked compared to the other boats in that division and she is 68 feet.
Merlin is much more narrow than the rest of the fleet, which can make her look a lot smaller. She also was using a very small jib from what I coul see.

Last I heard, Kenny was coming in for Mac, but that was over a month ago. Brad agreed to do some stuff for us this summer, he is definitely on the boat (I think he is the boat captain for QC and Mac)
When you say you, do you mean writing for SA or sailing on Natalie J?
Sorry, writing for SA.

I am not regular crew on NJ, my summers are too full of traveling for it unfortunately. Sharon (BO's SO) told me on Thursday when she gave me a Hanes cotton NJ shirt that "when you do more than one race a year with us, we'll get you a real crew shirt!"

Three miles ahead three miles from the finish and got beat by ten minutes in those conditions?. Sorry, but that doesn't pass the smell test.

Somebody's math is wrong. Puma fiinshed 50 minutes ahead of Windancer but owed them 99 seconds a mile with a PHRF of -168 per the posted results.
Winddancer and Windquest are different boats.....just a wee bit.
Whooops! My bad!

Puma was way faster. They were 3 miles ahead 3 miles from the finish.

It was a reaching race, Windquest has 14 ft of waterline over Puma.

I realize that you usually know everything but that's what happened......Unfortunately your smeller doesn't have the scent of a Volvo 70 identified.

I'll leave it to you guys to figure out "the rest of the story!"

Yep, and the rest of the story is that Puma was never ahead by more than 1.5 miles and was to the North of Windquest by about 2.5 miles. The three ahead with three to go was crap, and that is the rest of the story

Sam, was there any truth to the story of a finish on the wrong side of the committe boat?

Not that I am aware of, but I did not ask. When we finished they did not have the pin end out yet, so I am sure that it was also not out when Windquest and Puma finished. That makes finishing on the wrong side more excuseable. Also, I bet that in the discussions of the pin not being out somehow the story got changed to a finish on the wrong side of the mark. Sounds more likely...

Well I've been a little more than missing from the good old forms for a few months so here we go, what happened from on the WQ:

Well yes they, VO70, did cross the line on the wrong side. If the pin is missing the SI's show the boat to port. Want the real story here it is. We on WQ out jiged them and that's how we beat them across the line. A little less then half way across the 70 went to the large Mast Head Genoa, the one that tacks to the sprit and trims to the back ov the boat, this sail is a bow down go fast sail "not the right one to put up" in the words of one of our trimmers who sailed in the last volvo race on Ericson. The 70 had trouble hoisting that sail and dropping the inner genoa so they had to turn DDW for a bit to take the jib down. The big genoa dropped them way below rumbline and our navigator told us to stay high because he said there would be a shift to the east and we would have trouble laying the finish.

That's what happened to the 70 they went way to the north and had issues getting back to the south, on our AIS the largest lead they had was only 1.25 nm and by the time they got south to the finish we were a few boat lengths behind, they crosses the finish boat on the wrong side we crossed on the correct side to get a gun (to our surprise) I think the 70 was surprised also because they did a crash gybe to get back to the finish line but at the same time the wind went from 12 TWS to 27 as the front came in. I think that's why it took them 10 min to get back to the line; both the 70 and us were scrambling to get the big furling genoas down before something went bad.

It was a good race and for sure a race perfect for the 70 (15 TWS and reaching) it will be interesting to see how they do with us in the Mac. A few years ago the ABN came to race and we couldn't see them behind us by sunset. And we are now a different boat then 4-5 years ago, back then we still had a pin head main and spinn poles. It's great to see more big boats on the lakes and it should be a fun Chicago Mac, it's just too bad they aren't over here getting ready for the Bayview Mac.
