First to mind was when WOXI got line and handicap honors, and the race record in the S2H... but...Don't think the RP 46's ever sailed to their ratings. If fact when did RP last design a boat that did?
The RP82 "Highland Fling" is/was still competitive (Winner maxi worlds 2022, about 10-12 years after first launch). The TP52 they did for Oracle still proving to be a good hullshape but lacks the people (no offense) and hardware to deliver results. Their Wally Cento I think is still the fastest/winniest of the bunch (rated) but again not a design launched in the last couple of years.First to mind was when WOXI got line and handicap honors, and the race record in the S2H... but...
A) that was ages ago, and,
B) I can't remember how many non-RP mods had been done at that point.
I'll defer to someone with relevant information.
And I forgot Alive - which I believe is still in her original configuration, and is still a threat whenever she races and won the 2018 S2H.The RP82 "Highland Fling" is/was still competitive (Winner maxi worlds 2022, about 10-12 years after first launch). My experience is that their designs are quite durable and relatively easy for an owner to get a lot out of at the helm. Much like a Mark Mills design. J/V already can be a bit more extreme, the modern Botin designs often also have a performance edge but are harder to get there.
The 40-60ft bracket is a very difficult one as a TP52/Pac52 benefits hugely of the amount of money thrown at development every single year whereas the one-offs just lack the development in settings, hulls and sails.
When adding rating into the mix, 40-50ft will become very difficult to sail to the rating as the performance features in proportion carry a heavier penalty under IRC (basically you get the same number of points for your composite rigging on the 46' as on a 52' meaning that the boat speed has to go up the same for your smaller boat but you are in the wake of the 52s for the first part of the race where you are losing time/distance that is not included in your racing)
So there are many more variables than only the designer and RP is on my shortlist of offices to contact with owners but explaining that boat size and time in the boat will vary your mileage.
