I will (probably) be shipping a 6x12 cargo trailer from Seattle (or maybe PT) to Ketchikan with some stuff for the cruise home. (Outboard, dinghy, etc.) That is, if I can get enough interest from other racers to share the trailer space. Otherwise, I'll just ship a pallet. Either way, if you want to share the space and cost, let me know. Open to any other racers, too...you can get quite a few outboards in an enclosed 6x12 trailer.
We learned that shipping outboard gas tanks is a big no no. I carried the tank empty onboard after draining and letting it air out well.        I also drained the oil out of the engine, etc. This was shipping with AML, the barge service from Seattle to Alaska

I had a bad experience shipping an empty tank by Air to Ketchikan. We got busted for a dangerous cargo infringement. Could have been really bad for us but thankfully we got an official warning. It was stupid of us really. Consider the empty tank positive floatation.  Air freight is a viable option though as Alaska Air charges about a buck a pound.

Monday is the last day to sign up for the race. I should post the promo video but I found a Bloom County cartoon that seems to say, do you have what it takes?

New teams listed, a paddleboarder for the 1st leg, an Corsair24 and a Cheasapeake Light Craft style entry.

Hope to see Team N2AK this year, that is a fine match with the Sechelt sharpie team.

Looks like past winner Team Sail Like a Girl will be back with the Melges 32, another fine matchup to the experienced Figaro2 team. This seems to be the year to watch the most races within a race.
Sail Like a Girl have an international sailor on the crew that may give them the edge.

Teams Wingnuts and Ripple up for it too, if it's from PT.
It looks like we have 4-5 teams interested, depending on cost. The problem with shipping from PT is that the trailer has to go back to Seattle anyway to get to the AML terminal. If anybody who's interested in shipping also has a friend with a tow vehicle that's going towards Seattle, we can make it work. PM me to keep from cluttering the thread.

If you are local to SF Bay and interested in R2AK/pedal drives, we are throwing a send off party for 2019 Team Shut Up and Drive (Figaro 2) at Richmond Yacht Club on Wednesday, April 24th. The boat will be there and we will be letting people test the pedal drive and see the other modifications we have made. Event details are below, all welcome, hope to see you there!

No r2ak news from Roger Mann posted this year...wot is up?

" Interest and many questions have led me to explain this year’s expedition rig. It starts with a fast hull professionally designed and built for rowing and I have found to be similar to an International sailing canoe. Spec’s, nearly 20’ and only 58 lbs. I then added a mirage pedal drive and found that I can maintain 5+ mph over extended periods and sprint at 9+. These results are nearly twice as fast as I have had in the past. With a hull like this I knew I had to have a true wing sail on it and the pedal drive would allow motor sailing and quick tacking.
A 360-wing sail is made to stay up and weathervane when not driving the boat. Being a true double surface airfoil and nearly 8 inches thick it produces lift (drive) at only 10-degree angle of attack and sometimes feels like it goes directly into the wing although that is impossible. The sail is very easy to read because when you lose lift it changes shape and goes symmetrical, when “working” the high-pressure side is flat. A single line controls the boom, nothing else to do. When docked, or whenever you do not want drive simply un hook it and let it free.
Because the wing has a great deal of floatation internally the amas were designed small enough to submerge and allow a knockdown where the wing floats and the boat can be righted with very little effort and is nearly self-righting. Being able to have small amas is due to the true wing produces more drive and less heeling which is also why a smaller rudder and dagger board can be used and being smaller is less wetted surface creating drag. The amas pivot around the front connection and bungeed at aft to allow leading edge to rise and create less pounding into and through waves and ride over them somewhat. Having 200 lbs each of buoyancy is a safety factor, allows hiking out onto the aft arms and if needed the amas can be carried on the rear self-draining deck of the LiteRace hull while pedaling the boat or portaging. Total weight of the rig is still changing buts should be able to remain less than 130 lbs. Load will be limited but supplies for 30 day long expeditions doable. That is about it, simple but modern with a little technology thrown in. Breakable of course so a need for making good choices…..I am being mentored on that! "

Only one Angus Rowcruiser team so far?
There are two TriRaids though - one out of Bella Bella (Three-legged Cat) and mine out of Vancouver WA (Team ACE). Tried to convince Team Kairos with his RowCruiser to join this year again, but he is sitting out. Would have loved to see how the TriRaids perform against the RowCruisers.

Five more weeks to go!!!

Yes, an interesting mix of small tri's for the race and another matchup in a year of unusual matchups.

Is the Schock 40 going to have to cant their keel with a hand pump? Typically it's an electric pump. Seems like that is electricity being used to make the boat go (adding or removing righting moment)? Same could be said for the figaro2 using an electric pump to add water ballast.

When the RC asked me about my water ballast emptied by electric pump, they were only concerned about me using the jet for propulsion. Maybe the RC noted the boat has only a 48 hr range without recharging and said "have at 'er".

A genset to charge them would not be allowed. The motor on a tiller pilot is allowed.

This boat seems to rate -6 to -21 https://www.sailingworld.com/sailboats/schock-40-0

In my opinion this is the boat to beat, very quick upwind and no slouch downwind, with six onboard they will be able to go hard for the duration. Reminds me of Jungle Kitty for 2016.

So it was a tread already - started 6mnths ago - and Im not invited??? No wonder its been sleeping since last year....(no it hasnt - that was page one you idiot!)

Will read throught later - but just want to say - R33 vs M32 - its not a match - the M32 is so much faster and better buildt/designed boat.

In all fast boat you need the luck of not hitting a log or such.

Dont see the R33 in the start list?

The clear favorite must be Team Pear Shaped Racing. Its some other fast boats - its up to the crew - how hard they will push - we have seen many fast boats that are sailed in holiday mode.

I don’t think we are the favourite, the Schock 40 is super quick with some very good sailors on-board (one or two pros).  Definitely quicker than Dragon upwind in light/medium air. Downwind we will be comparable I think.

Depend on the sea state - if bumpy upwind the Shocker will be faster - if good sea state the Dragon can see 14knots... halfwind its no match the tri is much faster. Dead downwind - it can be a draw - if its abit from side - the Dragon is very fast... Superlight - the mono can have an advantage if its some waves...I find the the sail area is about 63m2 upwind - the Dragon I guess has +10m2 at least - and more stability. Racing monos use to have a sail for every knot of wind - and the people to handle it ....Its a good strategy to be 3 on the Dragon  - can be tempting with 4 - but the weight is so important - take food  for 3 days- but water for 5 just in case....
