Your friend can’t be that much of an idiot, if he can retire early, pick up some woman in a bar and take her on a cruise and do ridiculous crap with her?
Funny, good point. But honestly he just falls into this crap, wish I knew the trick :) He is on his way over to my place for a drink this eve, will ask wth it takes. He is leaving (but by car this time) to British Columbia to go salmon fishing, leaving tomorrow. I make relentless fun of him, for the upcoming Cruise Ship thing - and the gal! The 'fishing' up there must be stunning.

Speaking of.. I identified the cruise ship sitting in that webcam view (the Holland America MS Niewdam or whatever) but they do not have a live bridge or bowcam running, I asked.

The fastest in this Race's conditions, by far. Schooled!

Can anyone figure what the biggest historical delta has been, between the plank and the steak knives?
So far the biggest gap was in year one, 2015, between Elsie Piddock 5d 1h 55m and MOB Mentality 8d 3h 45m.

But that was also the first year of the race, before everybody figured out that the game is going all out nonstop until you get there.

Here's a listing of previous finishers:

If they started at noon on Thursday wouldn't that put them at 4 days 4 hours now, plus change until they finish, so likely the fifth fastest boat after the Shock?
Nice try, better than nothing, but that list is hard to read and doesn't have the 2019 winner... (P.S. I see the 2019 results now; confusing!)

I put this together:
  • 2015 (1st) 5d 1h 55m, Elsie Piddock - 26.9’ (8.2m) Tri - Corsair F-25C (3 Crew)
  • 2016 (1st) 3d 20h 13m, MAD Dog Racing - 31.8’ (9.7m) Cat - Marstrom M32 (3 Crew)
  • 2017 (1st) 4d 3h 5m, Pure & Wild / Freeburd - 28’ (8.5m) Tri - Cust. Tetzlaff / Melvin 8.5m Class (3 Crew)
  • 2018 (1st) 6d 13h 17m, First Federal’s Sail Like A Girl - 31.8’ (9.7m) Mono - Melges 32 (7 Crew)
  • 2019 (1st) 4d 3h 56m, Team Angry Beaver—Skiff Sailing Foundation - Schock 40 (6 Crew)
Sorted with 2022 (and 2017 2nd place Big Broderna) added:
  1. 2016 (1st) 3d 20h 13m, MAD Dog Racing - 31.8’ (9.7m) Cat - Marstrom M32 (3 Crew)
  2. 2017 (1st) 4d 3h 5m, Pure & Wild / Freeburd - 28’ (8.5m) Tri - Cust. Tetzlaff / Melvin 8.5m Class (3 Crew)
    2017 (2nd) 4d 3h 11m, Big Broderna - 30.8’ (9.4m) Tri - Corsair F-31R (4 Crew)
  3. 2019 (1st) 4d 3h 56m, Team Angry Beaver—Skiff Sailing Foundation - Schock 40 (6 Crew)
  4. 2022 (1st) 4d 4h 32m 39s, Pure & Wild - Riptide 44 (3 crew)
  5. 2015 (1st) 5d 1h 55m, Elsie Piddock - 26.9’ (8.2m) Tri - Corsair F-25C (3 Crew)
  6. 2018 (1st) 6d 13h 17m, First Federal’s Sail Like A Girl - 31.8’ (9.7m) Mono - Melges 32 (7 Crew)

If you're talking about winners yes, but you missed Big Broderna the second place boat from 2017 which finished in 4d 3h 11m.

I mentioned upthread about meeting Jonathan's younger brother Charlie for the first time. Watching this video and seeing Jonathan wearing just a T shirt when a bunch of folks were wearing coats instead reminded me that Charlie was also wearing just a T, in winter. Must be in the genes.. I quit on Charlie mid-winter, it was way too cold for me to be out on the Sound!

It would be great to hear from the Weta captain so he can explain why he didn't right the boat per the process you describe and carry on.

If he wasn't able to right the boat on his own, which we can assume because somebody photographed him and his boat upside down, and he was subsequently out of the race, implies that he "needed" rescue, even if the boat was righted with assistance and towed back to port. If they hadn't been there to help him what would he have done?

The fact that he wasn't willing or able to self-recover and continue within a few miles of the start is really the crux of the story.

If I were planning to sail a Weta to Alaska I would certainly ensure that I can right it in snotty conditions while loaded down with all the gear I'd be carrying on the trip.
Well if you had been anywhere after the start on Monday morning, that had a view NW from say point Wilson at the fort or up on the bluff you might understand why the nice gentleman on the Weta needed to be picked up. If you did not actually witness how shitty it was out in the rips Monday morning y'all might think twice about commenting on what you might be able to do on a Weta on a lake if it did not have 8'+standing waves.

This would seem to be against the rules —or against the spirit of the rules anyway— at least to my mind. Didn’t know you could have routing. From the rules: “R2AK was created to reduce the constructs to a bare minimum, trusting in the self-reliance, seamanship, and honor of our participants rather than relying on enforcement of an artificial body of rules.”

“Rule 3: Travel Unsupported

This means no support boats, no food drops, no guy you call for information or that other guy you hired to stand on the shore and hand you cups of Gatorade. The deal is that you can have help along the way, just nothing you pre-arranged and whatever you do has to be available to the other racers too.”
You call commanders weather up the week before , you get your data the night before , done . Its simple as that and commanders will do almost any type of boat on any type of trip. Jeez Johnathan has been sailing around the northwest his whole life, if you don't think he knows weather routing and forecasting you might be underestimating the Pure and Wild Team.

Easy there, cowboy. I wasn’t accusing anybody of anything, was just curious about weather routing.
