Step change! BAM! Checkmate! Does anyone know of a boat that has afaster VMG to windward than the AC72? (I am honestly curious).
ice boat maybe.
I can't imagine any sailboat faster.

Fastest boats. Check

Best sailors. Check

Match racing. Check

Lead changes. Check

A regatta of historic proportion? Time will tell.

Not the greatest AC race in history, Jesus farking christ!

The greatest AC race in history was and always will be AUDII winning against Conner.

Tied up at 3-3 a piece AUD won the last to take the Cup from NY.

Interesting but the deltas of those races are about the same as those we have now (with one exception).
I was 7 when the Aussies took the Cup from Conner. I had other things occupying my mind those days so I won't get in a debate over this AC being better than that AC. I call this AC the best based on the total package. Drama on and off the water. 2 teams with no love between them. Boats flying around on the ragged edge doing 40 to 50 fucking knts downwind and 30 fucking knts upwind. OR coming back from sure oblivion to win 8 races in a row to force a sudden death final race.

'83 can be called the greatest because the Aussies made the impossible, taking the Cup from the NYYC, possible, but AC34 will be the greatest to me because it lived up to the hype, it made the AC the true pinnacle of the sport of sailing.

KISS OF DEATH!! thanks a friggin LOT,.Doug

Congratulations to Team USA for race 18 and setting up the Great Race.

UPDATE-at the press conference they just said that the forecast for tomorrow is more like today than the 35knots that was mentioned earlier-RACE ON!

It's going to be a nailbiter even before it starts. I've got to support the guys right up to the end whichever way it ends. Team USA has done an incredible job.

Go Team USA! (and thanks to both teams for the most exciting sailing ever televised!)

I was not even thought of in 83, but the old tapes and docs are pretty compelling to watch.

I think it was pretty much the same (paraphrased from above),

'drama on and off the water, 2 teams with no love between them and AUD coming back from sure oblivion to win'

That win really opened up the Cup and led to Freo, perhaps the most diverse crazy shit AC ever seen.

No personalities anymore aka Tom Blackaller, it's all a bit too corporate and cleansed these days.

How Oracle accomplished “the impossible”:

10%; Oracle fixed their boat speed and handling issues race “four” or “five” and were no longer slower than TNZ. Since race 5, the boat speeds have been incredibly close.

90%; the after guard on Oracle now consists of 3 individuals. TNZ has two. Three vs. two is a huge advantage in any sport. To make matters worse for TNZ, the three on Oracle have very good communication and are getting better at it with every race. You can hear it in the audio. TNZ is simply coming up short against Oracle’s brain trust of three. When watching the replays you can see really see it. TNZ has made race losing mistakes, jibing into light air, going into slow point mode at the exact wrong time, tacking too soon or too late, etc. That’s where the big gains for Oracle are coming from. The “three” on Oracle are simply doing a better job with the tactics than the “two” on TNZ. For example, going up wind Oracle is doing most things right and making fewer mistakes. They are foiling into the headers and going into point mode in the lifts. They are choosing the correct side of the course most of the time. That is making them look like they have a much faster boat upwind. Unfortunately for TNZ, with only one race to go, it’s too late to add the third person at the back of the boat. Had they “matched” Oracle, adding a third brain at the back of the boat when JK was replaced, this regatta would have been over last week. Tomorrow, they need to get very lucky. Stranger things have happened, but based on what I’m seeing on and off the water, it is very unlikely. My money is on Oracle.

This is why i'm not in a froth over these finals. I mean, I'm totally captivated, watching every race...but this is not the best finals of all time. for me, 83 and 87 had way more backstory and historical significance.

In many ways, despite advances in technology and whatever thrills there are on the racecourse, the AC has devolved into a battle of corporate nations and its very hard to root for any team other than the one who will fuck it up the least the next time around.

This is EPIC. I have been watching the AC since I was a kid. Always been a fan. Cried when Australia took it from NYYC. Scrreamed at the top of my lungs when DC won it back. This event is and will always be the pinnacle of sailing to me. I know there are other events that are just as cool for some people. This is the one for me! Do I wish for some nationality rule to make it more fun to cheer for the USA, of course I do. Will I be heartbroken if it doesn't happen. Nope.

This is racing unlike any other.

Seeing the wing of Dogzilla being built here in Anacortes, knowing what it would mean and the game changer it was. Following DZ in the early days when they were sea trialing and getting left behind by a boat doing 25+ knots in 2-3 apparent on the water. Watching the "birth" of what we are seeing now....

Words fail me.

GO USA!!!!

Yes you and Fuzz have had a unique perspective on the evolution of the AC. Getting to see DZ being built and born till now, I am jealous.

Also, another interesting topic to ponder. What if EB won the court crap, or beat DZ on the water? What would we be watching now? AC90's tooling around, maybe getting over 15knts? Even EB's most fanatic supporters must now admit the right person won AC33, but they probably won't. ;)

Think of the history we are seeing here:

1) longest Americas Cup series,

2) biggest comeback ever,

3) fastest Cup boats in history,

4) first foilers in the Americas Cup,

5) Best TV coverage ever,

6) first access for The People to the finish line,

7) the largest number of lead changes in any America's Cup ever.

Thanks Larry and Russell and Jimmy and Ben and Kyle and to the whole team! Win or lose, overcoming an unfair, unjust and overreaching penalty has already been done and the charge of "bringing the America's Cup into disrepute" has been unalterably reversed by the sailing and coverage so far.

Go Team USA!
