Against my better judgment, I am responding to this post...I just got a new DL in the mail today! Didn't even need a new photo. Good for me I guess...Perhaps I can help anyone with a sufficiently open mind to comprehend how the Texas Republicans are making it difficult for texas Democrats to vote.
1. Most Travis County Democrats live in South Travis County. Travis county’s voter demographic by area is well understood by the Legislature which operates in Austin which is in Travis county.
2. The ONLY place a person can renew a drivers license or get a new one or get a voter ID is in NORTH Austin.
3. most people who ride busses and / or do not own cars live in South Austin
4. you must GO ON LINE and make an appointment or make an appointment at the kiosk in the office in North Austin
5. some days it is possible for early morning arrivals to make a same day appointment if the person can wait until afternoon or come back.
6. Anecdotal occurrence that woke me the hell up about the difficulty of obtaining a “photo ID” which can be used for voting.
a. My employee went to the office first thing on her birthday on a Tuesday morning to renew her drivers license
b. She learned she needed an appointment
c . She obtained an appointment for the next day at 10:30 am, drove home, and returned the next day ( this added 60 miles of driving and cost her five additional hours of lost work time. I paid her anyway but most employers don’t do that)
d. She was told she needed to show a birth certificate or a certified college transcript that had her social security number on it.
( note: neither has a photo ID or fingerprint. Her expiring license has her photo and she has held a Texas Drivers license since 1992. The Government has records of each of her photos.
e. Many south austin Democrats do not have college transcripts or copies of their birth certificates.
f. Anyway, my employee made another appointment for the next day, found both a college transcript and a birth certificate and went back. she now had missed more than a full day of work ( I paid her anyway) and was extremely stressed by the entire ordeal.
G. When she was going through the process for that fourth time the clerk informed her, “The reason the state needs all this identification is your name was different on the license you held from 1997 to 2003. It had your married name and beginning in 2003 you went back to using your maiden name. We need a copy of your divorce papers.”
WTF?? Her maiden name has been on her previous three / six year term licenses. Why in fuck’s name is that suddenly an issue??
H. She made another appointment and contacted her Ex-who was nice enough to work with her to have new paperwork generated, sign and have the papers notarized. Neither had kept any divorce papers after a few years and the divorce was twenty years ago.
i. She finally got the license folks to put her application through. Until it arrives, she has to drive using the temporary sheet of paper which DOES NOT have a photo ID. As it is illegal to carry an expired driver’s license in Texas ( you might loan it to a kid to get the kid past an id check and the kid might buy alcohol) she will be living with no photo ID for the next few weeks.
k. She had no current photo ID and could not vote on Tuesday
Those who set up this system knew very well it would cause more strain on the typical Democrat voter than on the typical Republican voter.
They can hide behind a “Same rules for everybody” claim but we all know full well the office location, on line appointment system, and paperwork requirements are three hoops which hinder poor folks from across town WAY MORE than they hinder nearby to the office typical Republicans. .
What the system is not:
a. It does not provide registration places which as are as convenient as possible fir those who do not own cars.
b. It does not have registration within ten Mike’s of the “Democrat dominated region of town.”
c. It has available registration dead center in the Republican dominated part of town.
d. it severely limits the access to those who do not have access to the internet
e. It flat out costs more time snd money for the typical Democrat to get a photo ID.
f. The office could be set up in south austin where real estate prices are much lower and labor is less expensive. Locating in North Austin is typical of the sort of government fiscal irresponsibility upon which Republicans regularly rail.
g. Locating in North Austin away from easily used mass transportation routes increases traffic on an already stressed road system.
the suppression system is brilliant, is perfectly obvious, it is very effective.
As it inhibits the exercise of the rights of voters it is Anti American and spits on the grave of every serviceman who ever fought for our freedom.
unfortunately, the Democrats are too incompetent at using the media to make our politicians treasonous behavior obvious to the majority of the public.
