I think I read the entire thread, but saw nothing about Rainmaker being damaged by contact with the small ship, other than speculation??

Did I miss something there??
In the Multihull Anarchy thread:

http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?showtopic=163512&p=4828385

A freighter attempted rescue alongside a few hours into this ordeal. After repeatedly bashing the side of Rainmaker, rescue was deemed too dangerous, and airlift was requested. We will not know the extent of the damage until we recover her. She was structurally intact with no water ingress.

Enough time has passed without anyone locating the boat to my knowledge that actually trying to find her will be fairly difficult now. With no radar reflector and no lights, I suspect that sooner or later a ship in the area will run her over or at least have a significant (For the catamaran) collision. Sad to see a boat that could have pretty easily been located and saved last Sunday end up in carbon splinters.

Can anyone shed some light on why there wouldn't be an all hands on deck call last Sunday when they knew approximately where the boat was and had a good weather window?

Where are you going to lay hands on a salvage vessel? Serious question, not sarcasm here. I have no knowledge of how this works when the object of the search is several hundred miles offshore.

Presumably, you'd charter a plane for the initial search, but lining up a tow is a whole other thing.

Is it possible that the drift from wind and current wash it towards any commercial shipping routes?

Not to familier with that part of the coast. Have any charts been posted up yet?

Is there any yarn discussing the fact that in the CG video both sterns of Rainmaker are clearly partially submerged???

I've been repairing boats for 23yrs and when unfortunate things like this happens the earbashing is to blame the captain/owner, but often its a simple parts malfunction

the marketing photos both sailing and dock show transom steps easily out of the water. Without a mast Rainmaker should be even lighter....but in the vid the two hulls are partially submerged at the stern which means flooded with water, sorry chaps there is no other explanation

two holes or two thruhull failures is possible, but I'd wager its heaps and heaps of water over the transom...either leaking into the hulls from salon (swimming pool?) or if waves really big zonking the aft deck hatches - on a monhull that would eventually knock out the engine and the batts

probabs we're not as smart down here as you yanks, but are you folks are skipping over the obvious???

The boat seemed to be dragging its transoms a bit in happier times (look at the interview vids), and that was with a rig on the front and without a 500 lb RIB hanging on its ass. So I'm not sure what can be read into that.

Can you post link of video of Rainmaker's stern steps submerged in happier times - every one I look at has the stern steps above waterline - curious as what point of sail submerges the aft stairs

Not quite submerged but nearly level in flat water:

There are fleeting moments in the video showing waves rolling up the steps, the clearest (not IR) at

Me too. She seems to be skiding backwards causing the steps to dig in. She doesn't seem to be lumbering and if you watch the IR shots closely, her bows seem to be getting up on top of the waves easily. All in all she seems to be coping well with the sea state.

On a dismasted catamaran, assuming you have a Jordan-type drogue and/or a sea anchor, how would you set up in a simple storm, and how would you set up in a wind-against-current situation like the one that faced Rainmaker? How much water intrusion into her cockpit/salon should you anticipate?
