RAINMAKER DISMASTED OFF HATTERAS IN GALE

I observed a trend over the years, to remove any aspect of sailing from sailing.

Furlers-check.

Electric winches-check.

Autopilot-check

No heeling condomarans-check

Let's get that ugly mast out of the middle of the salon-check

I agree... At some point why not do the obvious and remove mast and sails altogether? It's the logical endpoint. Then actual sailors will determine the market, and the condo-buyers can have their separate party barge market.
I think they are operating on the same principle they used in Viet Nam a long time ago concerning the town of Ben Tre. 'It became necessary to destroy the town to save it' Perhaps it is necessary to destroy sailing to save it?

"seas around 15" according to Rainmaker's captain, in part 2. I would say 12-14 feet. Salon roof is ~9.5' above water.

Not so bad if the boat still worked. They were expecting 35 knot winds and stronger gusts, so how much sail did they have up?

Seems like the engines were used too soon, before clearing the rig and lines. Did hydraulic lines leak before they were cut?

there are now sailboats for every kind of sailor - not just the kind of sailor you are

why should all sailboats be built to appeal to you?
GB owners are sailors? Seriously?
Well, they certainly aren't the IOR warriors of yore, when the men were men and the dolphins were nervous, instead of jammers, somebody just gripped the line in their teeth and you didn't dare reef unless it was blowing at least 70 lest somebody accuse you of being a pussy after the race, that's for sure.

So I take it one of the those winches would be for halyards.. then jibs and large headsails... How do you trim the main... just the push of electric buttons? With no outside cockpit on the 55 is everything really clustered around that single station?
i'm not a fan of this set up

the bigger GB's with the forward cockpit are much better - i think.

the main is hydraulic
As with the older GBs there are stoppers ahead of the winches for each line. Two hydraulic winches with a mechanical in the middle I think. You need to keep things pretty organized, I know that some bags were added to stow the tails that are not shown. Most any boat can be cluttered at times, self tacking jib reduces the line adjustment some, the old saying that you can judge a sailor by his ropes would apply here.

How much of a problem?

More than a bilge pump could manage - or a bucket?

Unless they cracked the hull hitting the ship - this boat looks likely to keep floating.

Is it the forward sliding hatch that got damaged? The glass has nothing to do with making abandonment necessary. The only glass aft is isenglass. There are hatches that slide over the hull compartments to keep water out. Did they get damaged?

*** Ok, port hull sliding hatch wouldn't close. That is a problem, obviously.

^^ FORA and MORC too...

No matter the era I have never liked a boat with a ton of exposed glass, as this case points out. The hulls, etc. look totally seaworthy, but the blown-own glass along with the damaged hatches make abandonment necessary.

Get the kite up on deck...

Watch Clean's pimping video on the owners. One of the cutie wives talks with pride on her J105 accomplishments.

If you pull some of the old marketing materials you could reach the conclusion that Gunboat is really nothing more than a MacGregor on steroids... fast, light, go anywhere with the whole family... Now you can have a wider and faster MacGregor in any paint combination at less than 200 times the original cult(relabled Tribe) cost.

Also quite an interesting layout. Better for sail management, but imagine the shit storm when this rig fails. I'm not a cat guy; however, i'm thinking that keeping the rig on the outside might be a decent idea.

Brilliant. Go away to sea, and sit a leather-covered chair just like the one at your executive desk and in your executive car. Wankers.

What boat is in that picture, Wafi?
Rapier 550.....Euro version of the GB55.

Holy crap.....that looks terrible. So why did the pretty one have to be abandoned at sea? The above boat will be around forever......I feel bad for the their slip mates. Imagine waking up to that every morning! The d-bad inside does not have to look at it.

Uhhh, you forgot to mention unstepping the mast, and motoring down the ICW to Charleston, no?

:)

Yeah, if those guys like Bernard Stamm would only revert to hank-on headsails, and sheet-to-tiller or windvane self-steering, well... then perhaps I just MIGHT think about considering them to be REAL sailors...

There is only one good thing to be said about that boat. It disproves any notion that more money equals better taste

... Girgle.. Gurgle...

So the boat itself is outside the environment, but the inside is inside the environment so everything inside is outside and outside is outside but really inside... Gurgle... Gurgle..

Wait, What??

Did the front fall off???

and since it did,

is it inside or outside...???

My above post makes no sense without #1400...
I liked it just fine as a standalone. If you're relying on one of my posts to make yours make sense, you have a very shaky lifeline.
Ish, how many avatars are you planning this year?
Planning? What is this "planning" of which you speak?
I read about it somewhere, have tried it once or twice but most of the time some other idiot fucks it up.
