mighty big looking outboard on that RIB - would it have been prudent to use RIB to tow/maneuver/push RM ?

Could RIB have been used as lifeboat as a plan 'D' in event RM did sink ?
Maybe if the RIB was jettisoned RM would not have sunk. That think looks pretty damn heavy to strap onto the ass of a light cat.

The "Rainmaker Dismasted" thread. As far as the Ed and Clean are concerned, it is the thread that keeps on giving. Keep on clicking anarchists!

Yes maybe, but I don't think she has sunk. I have a bet with you RM is found….

I would have been happy to take the rib and a portable vhf and epirb and started heading west. Follow the sun! (In the afternoon)

I saw Tom Hanks lifted off of a small raft alongside a giant container ship. It can be done!

By the way. The ship was fully laden and bunkered on its way to Canada. I highly doubt her topsides were covered with barnacles. That's bad business.

But then again, they might have been killed by its completely exposed giant spinning prop.

But bunker oil is lighter than water, so when you bunker wouldn't the ship float higher?

This is the dumb comment thread isin't it? or am I lost again.

Full of cargo.

Full of fuel too.

;)

Yes, well. That explains the exposed prop.

Maybe Rainmaker was going so slow and got caught by the storm because the RIB had come off the davits, deflated, and sank. They were towing the sunken RIB behind them!
Well that does make for an interesting thought experiment. Suppose Rimas had been captain of RM. Would he have called for help? Would he have abandoned ship? Hardly!! He'd be halfway to halfway there by now. RM with no mast is a better sailer than his present setup.

Well - my experience is almost entirely on 5 knot sb - but the simple statement that "the ship hit my bow" is kind of tricky.

Typically, the bow does the hitting.
Not when you are in reverse trying to back away.
Which engine were they 'reversing' with - the one with the fouled prop, or the one that didn't run?
Read part two, it is pretty clear.
Okay - he said they were making 2 to 4 knots down the waves. Which would seem plenty for steerage and give enough control not to prang the bow of your boat straight into a ship (any captain's nightmare). But, it was a washing machine out there.
And the RM's velocity unknown (to me).

For some reason I was trying to figure out why the captain of the ship screwed up the time and distance equation so (apparently) badly. My assumption was that the RM was simply going faster than he anticipated.

Which would make some sense, I guess that boat is slippery even without a rig.

ok enough...gotta throw in my 2 cents even though this topic is done and gone...I have both questions and opinions about this event(many of which have already been expressed...but to recap). Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert.

opinion

Plus one for the captain getting everyone off ok. Job done.

questions:(design/seamanship...not necessarily in that order)

1 autopilot in 20-40 knots??(on a cat?)

2 no sea anchor?

3 i read in one post that there is no boom vang? did i misread?

3b dumping the entire rig(main) with a push button might help prevent capsize...but what about shock loads...once the rig/hull slams back into place?(not really sure how this works in practice)

4 removable cutter/baby stay to help stabilize mast under reefing?

5 maybe some type of running backstays(exit half mast) for storm conditions?

6 b plan/safe harbor?

7 can u program an autopilot for multihull deathzone?(not that this applies in this case but if they were to do it again...?)

8 maybe main halyard/traveller...jib sheets could be specked out for delivery? i.e.(more stretch)

9 looks like this boat could do 3plus knots downwind with no rig under the conditions(as an option)

10 never been down that way in the dead of winter. is it nice?

opinion:

not sure why this has been captivating me so much. Might be the intrigue of these boats or where a portion of sailing is headed with multis. Checked out a couple of these Gunboats in Newport a couple of months ago. Definitely interesting. But hold on a minute. A buddy of mine just dropped off a stack of 70s sailing mags. Interesting how the adverstising hasn't changed to this day. The holy grail of racer/cruiser or cruiser/racer is still alive and well in 2015...and i think this is part of whats going on here.

These boats are pretty...but seriously...if you had one last kick at the can...sorry...gavel down...
