big pimp'n for Gunboat today - poor PJ
Looking at the elapsed time results, they are fast - but not disruptively so. We must consider that Tocatta was likely very conservatively sailed with new owners and a new boat.

Gunboat 55 Tocatta, ET: 4:07.53

Catana 65 Selika, ET: 4:07:55

Lagoon 440 Eyowyn, ET: 4:17:43

Etc.

First production monohull -

J 125 Hamachi, ET: 3:46:05

First production cruising monohull -

X-55 Enigma VII, ET: 4:05:33

Followed closely by many others.

Tribe did better at 3:04:02, beating all but one of the monohulls.

really.., i think that's a little ungenerous...

the one monohull that tribe didn't beat is a Volvo 70 - and they were pretty close to tied...

3:04:02 vs 2:58:37 - a delta of about 5 1/2 minutes out of ~180 minutes

PJ's main claim is that GB's have the speed of racing monohulls, but with a very high level of comfort

I think you have to agree that in this case, the boat met that standard.

The one monohull that Tribe didn't beat is a very slow, horribly maintained and poorly sailed Volvo 70 with very old sails... and full of charterers.

Wondered about that - is there any way to see the course on the Heineken site? They used to have more bells and whistles there including as I recall tracking.

Did the Gunboats sail a longer course than the charter cats? That had been normal in the past.

pretty sure the VO-70 had a 5 NM shorter course, he didn't go all the way to blowing rocks. Course 25 vs. 24 i think for CSA 1

And you can DEFINITELY not judge the speed of the G55 by any results this week. Lots of gear issues.
OK. We won't judge speed by failures of disruptive technology. And we won't judge seaworthiness by a mast falling down and other problems resulting in abandonment. At what point IS it permissible to pass judgement on the GB55?

Once all the bugs have been worked out of a new design.... like any other sailboat.

Like Commanche? Much more complicated, much more "disruptive technology". Nothing broke, 2nd in their first race out of the box. Didn't even have to be abandoned. I guess we have to give GB a special pass, since they're a major ad space buyer.

I'll see your Commanche, and raise you a BPV....
