OK. We won't judge speed by failures of disruptive technology. And we won't judge seaworthiness by a mast falling down and other problems resulting in abandonment. At what point IS it permissible to pass judgement on the GB55?
It's always permissible, but if you are looking to judge speed, you probably shouldn't look at results that reflect shattered sails or stripped sheets or other things that cost many minutes on the course. I'm guessing you will need to wait until another event to judge the G55s performance potential.

So Clean, what is the overall impression? How does the new Nigel Irens design look (when not in failure mode) compared the older models. Every video, pic, etc. has them way behind immediately? Toccata seems to be diving through the water while Elvis, Tribe, Coco seem to be blasting over the waves? Is your impression that the new generation will be able to carry the torch? I realize it is way to early to tell based upon results, but would love to get the impressions of people in the know on how they stack up. Curiosity is obviously high when it is the first time the boats are on the water together.

shattered sails and stripped sheets on a new Gunboat? Well, they didn't drop the rig, so I guess they're getting better.

That could be due to the highly disruptive paid crew and not the gear. But I can't believe people are still sailing these death traps!

When I have designed class approved vessels for ocean service we tried to keep the max window width for wheelhouses < 1m wide. Even then the glass thickness required was 19 mm thick ! Wider than that and it was too costly because window thickness would approach 25mm very fast with increasing span. I doubt the GB windows were that thick. Class doesn't allow plexi windows but they are stronger than regular glass so you could maybe use 15mm in plexi instead.

 
Tell toccata to up the halyard tension on everything plz...

Reprogramming and retraining J105 crew and owners may be tough. That may be a double edged sword too. Once you get the J105 mindset out, will they be qualified victims for the GB sales and marketing tribe? When you need people with low expectations and money to burn where do you go J105 Fleet...

This boat is not subject to Load Line Convention requirements. She can have any damn window material. If sold to EU she has to meet the Eurorules for boats.

The windows on the GB are not "protecting access to spaces below" and not an issue at all. The damage to the companionway was important but losing the windows was of no consequence at all.

The glass thicknesses you quote are based on tempered glass. Laminated glass is considerably thinner if it is of the high performance tested variety. Also sounds like Position I. usually pilothouses are not Position I. At least on motor vessels. Sailing vessels yes, maybe depending on geometry and arrangement.

I`ve been reading posts and wathching videos of gunboats and IMHO old gunboat series look much better than the new ones, more solid. But still I know nothing...

The GB55 seemed very slow, compared to everything. It came dead last in every race by a long way. One hour behind Gunboat 66 in a 3 hour race. when it does go it develops massive roaster tails. Perhaps obvious signs the boat is well over weight?
