Kent Island!
Maybe this explains how the owner and son were "in shock"

Amazing how PJ can blissfully tell this tall tales in this day and age and actually think he won't be called on it.

LOL

From the FB page:

"Five months after the owner and crew abandoned her, Rainmaker continues to take care of herself. Months of North Atlantic wintertime gales. Spotted June 16 at 5pm at Lat 35.36.282 N Lon 062.17.187 W

Thank you Capt Reinhard Peer aboard the Hapag-Lloyd containership Chicago Express for the info and pictures. Rainmaker owner and insurance have been given the info. Let's go get her!! Rainmaker deserves better than this!"

Very interesting damage. Looks like roof structure was glued to deck, & glue lines failed entirely. Also 7 out of 8 deck hatches gone entirely - blown out by air pressure surges in hulls as they flooded?

Let's say some pour slob brings it to shore next to the GB Barn and hands it over gratis

What would it cost less that Building 100% New would working around all the broken Bits Cost to restore ?

What % of New Cost would a 100% Restored to As-New GB be worth with a Salvage Title ?

is the Wine aging properly ?

any reason someone isn't required to put a tower w Lights/Flag and an Transponder on it ??

shouldn't it just be Sunk before it sinks w some other boat that hits it ??

Anyone see the Flyin Hawaiian lately - During the rescue for that matter ???

If you are building an offshore boat and you expect the hatch to be as strong as the deck, you have to pick an appropriate hatch. Most are nowhere near equivalent to the deck. For most yachty purposes this is an acceptable compromise. Just not for all yachty purposes.

Most hatches on pleasure boats are underspecified, to put it mildly. I won't make a direct allegation in the case of this boat--it could be that the hatches exceeded the applicable EU requirements. It could be that RAINMAKER's deck is "too strong."

Just go to the next boat show and crawl around. You will find "watertight hatches" in the cockpit sole of motorboats that are not only not watertight, but that have gutter drains that drain to the bilge. You will find wires running through the bilge and through rough-cut holes in structure without protection from chafe. You'll find that those holes were not compensated for in the laminate. You'll find pot-metal fittings that are far undersized. And on and on and on...

Oh and your observation about flooding causing hatch failure is very good. Indeed hatches are usually not anywhere near as strong going the "wrong" way.

OK, what deck hatches do you like other than the solid aluminum USCG rated units?? Must allow light to pass thru, reasonably easy to open. Are there any options other than the Lewmar type?? Offhand I can't come up with a hatch that has any major extra strength than the Lewmar type.

The Atkins and Hoyle hatches that I replaced with Lewmars were considerably beefier and stronger than the replacements. They also leaked. A lot.
