Voted by the British public as the greatest British painting of all time, and I don't disagree. Turner's seascapes were magic, and this one incorporates the Empire, and loss of it, as well as the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, all in one serene sunset.

I saw that in the Turner gallery in the Tate. It was part of a room full of his work. I was working my way along the paintings when I came to this and was stopped in my tracks. It was mesmerizing, all the more so for being mixed in with his landscapes and seascapes.

Death on a Pale Horse.

This was painted almost 100 years before the Impressionists.
