The original "Michelin Man". From an advertisement campaign of 1898.
The Michelin Tire company ad campaign was stating:
"Le pneu Michelin boit l'obstacle"
The Michelin tire swallows the obstacle.

The French sentence uses the verb drink (boire), rather than swallow.

In French we call the Michelin mascot "bibendum".

Because the poster first showing it used the latin sentence: Nunc est bibendum.
And now, one must drink...
