Regripping winch drums?

I have a set of Harken halyard/spin sheet winches on the cabin top that really don't grip lines very well any more. The drums themselves are almost shiny and any grip they once had is mostly gone. Has anyone attempted to "re-grip" their winch drums and if so I'd be curious to know what you did and how you did it.

Thanks in advance for any insights

I sent 4 winch drums back to Harken for resurfacing during the off season in 2019.  They came back perfect!  I think the cost was about $100 per drum.  You have to take all the pieces off and degrease them before sending them back.  We have a local Harken place in Newport who did the shipping.

Thanks, I reached out to Harken and it sounds like the anodizing shop they used to finish them after they resurface them has closed up shop. They are hoping to find a new supplier but they are not taking any new drum refurbishment orders for the time being.

With guidance from Harken, my primary winches have been knurled for more grip. I have been advised to remove the plastic skirt and inner gear prior to re-anodizing. I could use some advise on their removal. Thanks.

I called Oyster Bay Boat Shop and they no longer perform this service.

I am answering my own question. The plastic skirt can be pryed off. It takes some doing. On the second skirt I used a heat gun to warm the plastic a bit and that helped alot. The gear is part of the drum casting and is not coming off.
