Religion is the opiate of the people

That’s an interesting paragraph but I have no idea what it means….

:) It means that you shouldn't cherry pick your philosophy.

Its largely lost today but most religions frameworks were built AS FRAMEWORKS - meaning all the pieces fit together. If you just take one piece out of context, then the overall concepts don't make sense anymore. Justice without compassion is just vengeance - that kinda thing.

That happens all the time when people start quoting scripture. They mix up the old and new testaments, and the results seem like nonsense because it is nonsense. The 'truth is pitiless' largely was in refutation of Eugenics. He was writing in 1908 and was pushing back against the Nihilists.

Context matters!

Possibly the best illustration of the absurdity of linking religion and war was a scene in The Longest Day - Kurt Jurgens plays a German general and at one point after hearing Hitlers latest stupidity he mutters "sometimes I wonder who's side God is on".
