Ok, I don’t talk much about this:
I grew up hearing the stories about the rise of the Nazis. I grew up hearing about how civil liberties were eroded until fascists had control. I grew up next door to a bunker with shrapnel stuck in it from allied bombs because of the Nazis.🧵
I grew up knowing that evacuation from the excavation of unexploded ordnance from the Second World War was just a fact of life.
I grew up to the stories of atrocities and deprivation that were a direct result of the rise of fascism in my home country.
I grew up to the stories from family who watched cities burn from white phosphorous. I grew up with stories of most of my family having been killed on the eastern front or near Berlin during the last days of the Nazi regime.
I grew up hearing about denazification and resettlement. To stories of the horrors of the Nazis and the atrocities of the Red Army who came as, “liberators,” afterwards.
Stories of my grandmother being 8 years old catching cats on the roof post war, just so the family could eat.
I grew up to the stories of how my family had its own small part that it played, and how that part was - to our everlasting shame - with the National Socialists.
All of those stories came down to a single point:
It was never the will of the majority. It was the will of a hateful minority that would stop at nothing to grab power. They would lie, they would twist truths, and they would do whatever it took to take and keep power.
Eventually, they used a manufactured pretense (the burning of the Reichstag) to take power. They knew it was a lie. Most people knew it was a lie.
But they told it anyways, and the majority of their supporters - hate filled, paranoid, clinging to a mythologized past…
Those supporters bought into that lie and amplified it. And regular people - they just let it happened.
One day, Germany was a free nation. The next day… it was not.
So when I see a former president of the United States calling for the nullification of the constitution over lies, twisted truths, and things not related to our rights as people?
It brings me right back to the Reichstag Fire Decree:
“the following is decreed as a defensive measure against communist acts of violence endangering the state:
…
Sections… of the Constitution of the German Reich are suspended until further notice.”
Including, “… restrictions on personal liberty, on the right of free expression of opinion, including freedom of the press, on the right of assembly and the right of association…”
I’m not an alarmist. One obnoxious blowhard in Florida does not have the power to make that happen here over night. But what that asshole is calling for is the same thing that the Nazis called for, and we all know how that went. We all know the atrocities they committed.
What scares me is this:
There are millions of Americans who will welcome that assault on freedom. Maybe because they’re ignorant to the reality of the situation, or maybe because their hatred of other ideas is so intense, they would cut off their noses to spite their faces.
Those people vote. They will absolutely vote a fascist to power. Many of them even admit it.
They may be your friends, they may be your neighbors, they may be your family.
Many of them can’t be reasoned with anymore. They are fascists. Plain and simple.
They are the enemy.
They’ve already voted some of their own into power. They will try to vote in more. In local offices, in state offices, and nationally.
Until they have enough power to take away YOUR vote. All under a bullshit pretext.
Hunter Biden’s laptop and Twitter employees biases have as much bearing on the stability of your freedom as the burning of the Reichstag did on the freedoms of Germans in 1933.
Irrelevant - and completely relevant - all at once.
Fascism in America won’t target the Jewish community or PoC - at least not at first. They’ve announced for years what they’ll go after.
They’ll go after LGBTQIA+. They’ll go after women. When that enemy of theirs is gone, they will find another.
Anything to retain power.
So my thesis is this: You don’t get to sit on the sidelines anymore. You don’t get the luxury of not voting, of not engaging - you don’t get that anymore.
That’s fucking done.
You either show the fuck up when you’re needed and do what you have to - whether that’s to hold your nose and vote for the lesser of two evils, or to stand on the line to protect the most vulnerable in your community…
Or you do what so many Germans did in 1933 - pretend it’s not real and then 15 years later try to convince the world that you didn’t know what was happening. That you’re not to blame.
You choose to enable the fascists.
For me personally - it’s an easy choice. I’ll vote for the person who is less likely to cause us to fall into totalitarianism. I’ll stand on the line and breath teargas again in defense of our communities, and I’ll put on my armor yet again if a fight comes to my door.
You want to call yourself an anti-fascist?
Fascism is knocking at your door. It’s right there. It’s begging you to do NOTHING so that it can come in.
It wants you to argue, to infight, to backbite, to focus on anything that distracts you from what’s at your door.
You don’t get the high ground here anymore. You get in the dirt and you fucking fight.
Whatever revolution or social change you might dream of?
Fantasy.
You need to survive. You need to organize, and you need to defend.
You need to fight this now - while you still can.
Because if you don’t, then when they start spilling blood - and they will - that’s gonna be on your hands too.
My friend, I promise you; you don’t live in a real fascist state. Not yet. No matter what your agitprop or outrage de jour tells you.
But when it’s over - and it will be, because fascism cannot survive long term…
