On-Water Program Director Job Description
The Rocking the Boat On-Water Program Director is responsible for running the after school and summer On-Water Education Program. This job is first and foremost one of an experiential educator, and successful applicants will be able to demonstrate their commitment and perspective to alternative forms of education. The Program Director works with a group of 20 high school aged students, introducing them to a range of maritime skills and environmental science activities and supervises between two and four Program Assistants. The position is also responsible for managing Rocking the Boat’s waterfront inventory of row, sail, and powerboats, dollies, and other boating equipment.
Duties include:
· Directing all after school and summer On-Water programming for 20 students age 14 to 18
· Supervising between two and four Program Assistants (age 17 to 20)
· Teaching a three-hour class four afternoons a week for two 13 week school-year semesters and a five-hour class four days a week for one seven week summer semester
· Developing and leading all maritime skills activities such as small boat handling, sailing, navigation, and leading short-term and extended rowing and sailing adventures
· Leading Bronx River environmental science activities such as water quality monitoring, oyster gardening, and fish reintroduction
· Collaborating with partner environmental organizations
· Maintaining and implementing all necessary safety protocols
· Managing and maintaining Rocking the Boat’s boat inventory including 20+ wooden rowing and sailing craft; a 20-foot fiberglass power chase boat; and other waterfront equipment
· Collaborating with Rocking the Boat’s Social Worker to recruit, support, and manage program participants
· Managing program volunteers
· Supporting the Development Department with grant proposals and reporting requirements
Requirements:
· Significant maritime skills experience (Captain’s license or equivalent experience)
· Experience in program and curriculum development for youth between ages 12 and 18
· Experience or desire to be involved in community oriented education programming
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
· Excellent organizational and communication skills
· Proficiency in basic computer applications, Internet use, etc.
· Spanish language skills a plus
