Varuna seem to be kicking some ass. Would be cool if they could beat BrunelDonnybrook, at 80 feet, behind and going slower than a 56 footer.

always newsworthy when a brand new 30-million dollar monster gets eaten alive by a boat from the bargain binIs this a surprise or something? I'm certainly no sailing expert, but the fact that the mod 70s are faster than ANY monohull does not really seem all that newsworthy to me. Am I missing something??Comanche eaten alive by MOD 70!
Tris are sailing 50 % faster on the Barbuda leg.
http://yb.tl/links/C6002016does anybody have a link to the SI's?
can't find it on the web site
i'm actually looking for the url low bandwidth position reports
A 4 million dollar boat is from the bargain bin? I don't know, its just my opinion but I find both types of boats to be impressive in their own ways and I enjoy both the by monohulls and the super fast multis. I don't find it to be a shortcoming when an high tech high dollar monohull gets outrun by a multihull. Both types of boats are awesome to me as a fan of sailing.always newsworthy when a brand new 30-million dollar monster gets eaten alive by a boat from the bargain binIs this a surprise or something? Maybe, but every time i say it someone rises to the fly.Offshore race thread turning into the usual crap.
Clean its not newsworthy to those who know the game
1) Phaedo cost less than half that. For a record-breaker, yeah - that's the bargain bin.A 4 million dollar boat is from the bargain bin? Not really. Both of these boats are sprinters, but one of them runs on engine power and can only run when he has 25 friends on his back. It's like comparing a running back and a 100m sprinter.
I'm not sure when Phaedo was constructed, but according to this article, the first 5 mod70s were sold for $3.5 Million which was actually below cost, boats 6-9 sold for $4.25 Million and subsequent boats for $5 Million. None of those are less than half of the $4 Million figure I cited. Regardless, in my opinion they are awesome boats as are the big Maxi's like Comanche.1) Phaedo cost less than half that. 2) I find it hard to be impressed with a boat that isn't even close to the fastest one there when it costs an order of magnitude more and weighs as much as a hose. Comanche is quicker than a J Class Yacht, but to me she is just as obsolete. Cool looking and obviously fast for a monohull, but from an era when logic and efficiency was less important than power and grunt, befitting her septuagenarian owner.
3) Opinions vary, and plenty of guys like big curvy' girls. I happen to like 'em lean.
Foiling across the oceans is next. Stay tuned. https://youtu.be/eKDjEfzGYIgA handful of the old guys will go multi (look at the Newport M32 fleet for a few early adopters), but most will probably find something more their speed and let the megaprograms fade away and do just a handful of regional races a year like the Perpetual Loyal. Some are already into the J/Class or classic yacht racing anyway.
The next guys are already on deck in the USA. Lloyd T, Renaud L, Jason C, Don W - these are the future record and line honors chasers, and they will inspire the next generations with their antics on multihull sailing porn. Europe is obviously light years ahead in many ways, but the yanks are catching up. Aussies have their TVS and TA and some money and will to move forward, but the CYCA restrictions against multihulls for Australia's most important race means that they never have the kind of resources or competition they need to challenge on a world stage.
MOD 70s got a whole lot more expensive last year though thanks to all the records dropping in such a (relatively) small and simple boat.
