Over the past few years I have had the privilege of including the SA readers in a number of sailing adventures which I have been fortunate to be part of through Roger and Isobel Sturgeon via Rosebud Racing. It has been a fantastic ride covering three continents and multiple venues. I have been able to include SA readers in our biggest victories at Transpac, Newport – Bermuda, Antigua, Cowes Week, Key West, Rolex rating series (AUS), Solas Big boat Challenge, San Francisco Big Boat Series, Pineapple Cup, Block Island Race and of course Sydney to Hobart.

Unfortunately, for the foreseeable future there will be no more racing adventures to tell you about. During the Middle Sea Race I wrote in the SA forum about loosing our mast shortly after we rounded Stromboli. What I did not write about was that we also damaged our hull in the steep sea state. Even though the damaged area is quite small, when it is combined with the damage totals to the mast and sails, it has been determined that it would be best to sell the STP 65 Rosebud.

Thank you to all the SA readers that have followed the Rosebud Racing regatta tour. It has been one heck of a ride. I hope that soon there will be a new racing adventure that I can write about on the SA forums.

Thank you,

Malcolm

Hi

Thanks so much for taking the time to allow us (me) to live vicariously thru your well written descriptions of your adventures.

If you are ever in Hyannis and want to go for a blast on my trimaran, let me know.

glowingly,

Trackday, thanks for letting us into the inner workings of sailing on Rosebud, such the envy of so many sailors, and for letting us know what is going on in the program now. We saw Roger at the skippers meeting for the race to Key West and were sad to know he and the team wouldn't be racing to win again this year. No doubt you'll find another great ride, but always sad to lose one.

I saw Roger Sturgeon at BIRW this year--and we shared the stage with him during the awards. We both won Rolexes --his 20th (probably) our 1st--he was a complete gentleman. The Merchant Marine guys on Vanquish (nee Moneypenny) told us the Roger had donated thousands of dollars worth of sails and equipment for their STC 65 program. Quite a guy

He will be racing with a new boat as soon as all this stuff gets sorted out.

Most likely the boat will be sold "as is". However you have to fix this crack in the outer skin plus the rig....

A little bit of epoxy and some carbon or $40k and she'll be right

Anybody know what is causing the reddish discoloration in the crack?

nice boat - i saw her at newport shipyard, and was quite impressed.

it's kind of surprising that a boat like that could have such a major hull failure...

i don't know much about it, but aren't these boats supposed to be constructed to the highest standards for offshore racing?

it's not such an old boat..., is there some sort of hull warranty?

or, is it just caveat emptor, where high-end custom race boats are concerned?

I always looked forward to reading you reports on Rosebud Malcolm,

Thanks!

I met Roger Sturgeon in Charleston, SC and had a great conversation with him. Roger is truly a great guy and the kind of boat owner that I aspire to crew for.

Best of luck to the Rosebud team and hope you guys are back on the water soon with an even more awe inspiring sled.

Very few boats are built on a handshake these days.

There may be contracts for any number of the phases of bringing a custom race boat from idle barroom chatter to the start line. One might start with requirements from the design fee such as the completeness and level of detail of the actual plans. A sub-contract or entirely separate contract may be written for the structural engineer. Certainly the sort of issues involving structural engineering especially in regard to new high-load systems seem to be popping up with more frequency. Then there is the relatively simpler contract with the builder: that he follow the plans as delivered by the designer and the engineer. Some of the issues are complex and/or detailed down to the decimal point. For example, when you take your delivery of your new 65-foot boat, is the cost of stepping the mast included? Who pays for that first rig tuning? How much factory support for the first few days? Weeks? Months? Each one of those items represents an outlay of money and thus is likely to be itemized in a contract.

I don't know the details of Rosebud's hull damage, but that boat has raced far and wide and has been pushed as fast as she can go for a good long time now. I think the structural parts of any contracts appear to have been met. Still, looks bad. :(

Is that a result of a keel grounding?
