Oman Sail-Musandam has 180 mile to go and is gybing downwind at 25 kts!

Meanwhile in the North Sea the poor old J109 is at the back of the fleet with 1,343 miles to go with 20kts on the nose, close hauled doing 5.4kts. About 250 miles to round Muckle Flugga! This will be an endurance test for them and others in a similar position.

25.6 kts @140° 04:00 BST 171.5 miles to go

8hrs to go for the record they have to keep ave speed over 22kts to make it. Wind should last till the end I really hope they willmake it

Dongfeng has had a tough go of it heading south; anyone know if these are the conditions that they would normally be using their ripped sail? Alvimedica has steadily gained on them.

And now they've had to do a couple of jibes. They still have position on Alvimedica, but SCA is charging into their lee. Impressive run by them from the back, they have a legit shot at competing for third now.

Walker, of course, is long gone.

After changing three times course in the last 30 mins Oman is now doing 18.6kts, too slow to get the record. they should count on 15kts of wind all the way.

SCA is being shown in fourth, by the way. Great comeback after the, uh, windfarm excursion. Alvimedica (now 5th) and Dongfeng are both desperately jibing in the light breeze, but things are coming together.

Wow, what a sight to wake up to! Never knew a tactical decision like going a bit eastward of the other's could make such a difference.

Also, how is this not a more popular sport?

And I like BT comments:

Brian Thompson, skipper of IMOCA 60 Artemis-Team Endeavour, contacted the RORC Media Team as they rounded Out Stack. At their current projected finish time, Artemis-Team Endeavour will break the IMOCA 60 record, set in 2010, by over 24 hours.

"We haven't gone upwind since the start and, as we arrived at Muckle Flugga, the breeze switched around 180 degrees and we still haven't!" explained Brian. "I have held the overall record three times, including onboard Banque Populaire, so to add the IMOCA record would be fantastic. It's looking hopeful; four years ago it took Artemis two and a half days to get up to the top of the course, so we are already 12 hours ahead of their track. Apart from some bad sea-state plugging the tide at Great Yarmouth, we have been up to full pace. Right now, we are just taking it a leg at a time but we think we will be in Cowes for a Sunday Roast."
