Both Bramble and Chi Met are showing 15 gusting 20 SSW/SW. Marine Traffic has them doing 21kts and the Tracker has them at 19kts with 6.2 nm to go. 20 minutes ish if they can straight line it. Looks like they might have to tack out of Osbourne Bay though. Cant seem to get either the Spinlock or the RYS webcam going.

Surely you'd just bear away in Osbourne bay (on Port at the moment) and then gun it for the outer end of the line (which is what in the SI's?) - may require a tack but hopefully they'll get the lift on Port close in to the Medina?

They've really slowed down now, however it's still blowing 15 knots at the entrance to Chichester and in the Solent.
12 knots so close to the finish line and the clock ticking must be soooo frustrating
They have to go upwind through the solent yet.
Which is a bit of a swizz for them, really. They're not sailing the WSSRC course - as that is round the south of the Isle of Wight, and has three possible start lines (Ventnor, Ramsgate & the Lizard), so aren't eligible for the BP V record. But they're annihilating the Groupama 70 course record.

Might see them coming up the Solent on the Spinlock webcam.

Thinking about it I was talking bollocks. They're on port, if they get knocked they'll just end up at the outer end of the line, which if they're using the full squadron line is the full width of the deepwater channel.

From http://roundbritainandireland.rorc.org/

"Sidney Gavignet and the crew of Musandam-Oman Sail, a MOD70 Trimaran crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes at 12.42.36 BST on Thursday 14th August 2014 with an elapsed time of 3d 03hr 32m 36s. This breaks the previous World Record for a multihull held by Banque Populaire 5 in 2011, by 0hr 16m 38s and is subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council."

So they beat the record by 18mins, but as far as I can work out it won't stand. Like Ed says they didn't start from one of the 3 'official' lines the WSSRC recognise (ignoring the fact that if they had started from Ventnor it would have taken them even less time).

I don't think anyone at RORC has thought to check, they could be in for a bitter disappointment, still an epic achievement though and they obliterated the race record.

I have asked RORC. I don't see how, but according to them the start of a course can include the RYS line as long as the course is as follows:

Course: the course must enclose the whole of Britain and Ireland and the following islands or rocks: Scilly Is, Fastnet Rock, Great Skellig, Tearaght Is, St Kilda, Sula Sgear, Muckle Flugga.

Hmm, will be interesting to see what WSSRC say. In my view morally it counts as if they'd started/finished at Ventnor they would have actually been quicker, having to go in and out of the Solent added time but rules are rules.

Great Achievement for Oman, incredible performance.

Team Campos and Azzam are gone, they've 1st and second pretty sealed up.

Very tight between the last 3 volvos, I reckon it'll be SCA, Dongfeng and Alivmedica.

Impressed with how Dongfeng have done with such a fresh crew in some parts, only lagging due to sail damage

Morally, the record should stand for the reasons stated above.

But rules are rules, and I can't imagine the WSSRC being too keen on boats although they sailed the course, starting from places other than the three explicitly stated in the rules

,,,,,,, how is this not a more popular sport?
.

.....sailboat racing?? == capitalizing on the vagaries of the wind!?

......too hard to follow and too hard to bet on,,,,,,,but perhaps modern tracking,,grib files and footage will make it more accessible --still pretty geeky though

Just for info, La Promesse have managed to lose their YB overboard earlier today... so I'm afraid it's bobbing about in the North Sea somewhere near Shetland and not transmitting any more.

First time we've ever had a unit lost without a boat sinking, quite an achievement.
