Yup we had to stand by the drinks trolley who broke a rudder gudgeon in some challenging conditions. We ended up towing them most of the way to Port before handing the tow over to a bigger boat. Was a long night but once in sheltered water helped to effect a decent repair and set off at first light for the long tow in. Just had our redress hearing and have been given a finish time.

Hay Boo, How were the Rums..??

Thanks for the update on the Trolley with a loose wheel ....was wondering about the sea state.... looks real fun in your photos

was trying to get a bit of interest for the race. ...so call back anytime

ps. what year was Skinners video description of the race
Tack tack tack Kite tack tack Rum ... bin trying to find it...

Just got this description from Anna and Aaron Sailing

· One loooong leg done! (Only one more to go.) The west coast really delivered it all, from an awesome 15knot breeze getting us across the top of Cape Reinga to being stuck in the middle of a high for a couple of days sitting somewhere off the west coast. Only to finally get to the Cook Strait and be faced with a 30knot upwind and a heinous sea state to get us across to Waikawa. A pretty tough way to end a long leg, but managed to close up the gap a bit which made the long push last night worth it. Not the best result for us, but we are super proud and pretty stoked with how we sailed and for achieving such an awesome feat, five days, and 579nm covered. Lots of learnings to bring into the last leg!!

The video was taken after more than one rum bucket… Skinner might have drunk it all himself!

Equilibrium is trucking. The Dehler 30 Niksen has shown it's form. Mr Lucky 3600 still seems to be struggling - I would have expected it to be in front of the Young 11s in that breeze. Tom and Vicky in Zest decided that another lap of the North Island was a step too far. But they have absolutely nothing to prove. Happy wedding anniversary.

Mr Lucky's explanation of their relative performance, via their facebook page.

"Leg 2 update - The start was great - really well positioned and the first boat with a clear start and line. Did a great peel from the zero to the A1.5 in light air and once again, the lighter boats skipped away. A good work along the cape with the A5 positioned us well on the rounding. The after all the hard work - we stopped. Let's get something straight - Mister Lucky hates light winds. She is heavy (5.5t) and has a large beam (arse) - 3.55m - so that means she has a large wetted area, which becomes very sticky when there is no breeze. The result is all the lighter boats can skip away and make large gains while we bob around. That is what happened west of the north cape which resulted in a very frustrating leg. After we finally had some air, we had a great trip south under the code 0 - which had us at least in contact with the back markers. Cook straight finally saw some breeze (35kts plus) with Mister Lucky preforming well. After a 2nd reef failure - instead of going to the 3rd reef, elected to say on the 1st. While over powered, the helm was manageable and we were trucking- then we popped a number of the cars on the main - forcing us to finish the race with a J3 and 3rd reefed main. Frustrating and very tough leg on so many levels.
A couple of challenges / lessons - trying to compete with PHRS boats when you are rated for IRC is like the Aussie cricketers, trying to win against Indian doctored, cricket pitch’s. It just is not going to happen. Some of the angles these boats over here can fly, kites app, defies logic for a simple Australian sailors. Also, having live updated Internet, combined with the latest predict wind, routing software is a distinct advantage. Approximately 95% of the fleet have the setup with our data dial up GRIB and expedition software looking positively primitive. The latest iridium, go also supplies on demand and updated yellow Brick tracking information which is invaluable. This is especially evident when you lack local knowledge. The only other lesson is having some sort of dedicated shore crew to help with logistics in port. While not impossible, it has turned a marathon race into an ultramarathon for us.
Excuses aside, we are yet to see the weather conditions favourable for Mister Lucky and to be able to sail to her potential. Let’s see what happens in leg three."

Flying Boat was the top Y11 for many years out of Wellington. Sailed by a well known bunch of skiffies. Then it came to Auckland but is still well maintained with all the fruit and has a very good crew for the race. In terms of keel, she got one of the batch of bulb keels that went on a few boats at the same time that used the same keel bolt structure. Not sure if that has changed.
