Has HB gone to far?? Any one run the routing on that?
Just run one, course looks good for the next couple of hours. I have him dong another couple of NW sections before going west around the Azores before heeding from there directly towards Guadaloupe. Gives hm average winds of 20K and arriving 15th. probably earlier as  do not have an up to date set of polars for HB.

There was a lot more than just too much cantilever going on with Team Philips.
True, it was a nice concept design badly engineered but I remember them loosing a bow like this because they had underestimated the side loads. May be these foilers land back with a bit of leeway; enough to tear apart a hull bearing in mind the gigantic lever arm and the huge forces from water at speed.

Correct on all points, and yes it was a huge lever arm, approximately 50 - 60 feet

For the Happy heritage discussion;
https://www.routedurhum.com/en/skipper/118/charlie-capelle
“This year, yellow and vintage is all the rage!” announces Charlie Capelle. From the series of five A’Capella boats built from 1978, no fewer than three are taking the start of the legendary transatlantic race to the great delight of offshore racing enthusiasts and maritime heritage. Indeed, the small yellow trimaran really made her mark in the race with the memorable victory of Mike Birch in 1978 at the helm of Olympus, thanks to a lead of just 98 seconds over Michel Malinovsky. “For the 40th anniversary of the Rhum and the creation of the A’Capellas, we’ve initiated the ‘98 seconds for all eternity’ challenge,” explains the amateur skipper, a native of the Vosges in eastern France. Aboard his trusty and legendary trimaran Acapella, a multihull steeped in history, Charlie is lining up for the event start for the 5th time since 1998 and remains proud of his “Stradivarius” just like Mike was of his Olympus. Forty years ago the two men started out together with the construction of the A’Capellas in Maine (USA) and every stage of their shared passion writes an extra chapter in the history of these legendary duos. Now part of maritime heritage, his steed made from moulded wood (mahogany) remains high-performance, and even though a win will be out of reach for the boat builder, he remains an informed competitor. Mike Birch, his loyal friend and eternal accomplice, patron of Acapella, certainly won’t dispute this.

Team Philips was in short a laminate error. Delamination in a stack of carbon. Before prepreg and autoclaves solved that.

A lot of carnage already!  I count eight boats in this screen shot alone that appear to be heading for safe harbor, including Charlie Capelle on Acapella, with six more boats already in port.  Difficult to see this on any of the ranking pages though.  Would be nice to be able to sort a class or the whole fleet by VMG, making all those with negative values more obvious.

Lalou Roucayrol (Team Arkema) will head to Porto to shelter

The skipper and current leader of the Multi50 class, Lalou Roucayrol on board TeamArkema has made the decision to head to Porto to shelter, given the current weather conditions

Isabelle Joschke reports dismasting on Monin

At 3:50 am this morning, Isabelle Joschke's IMOCA, MONIN dismasted. The skipper is in good health and her team are ready to help her. She planned to wait until sunrise to assess the damage before starting her engine and heading east.

Dismasting for Sam Goodchild on board Narcos: Mexico

British skipper, Sam Goodchild has dismasted overnight whilst racing in third place in the Class40 on Narcos: Mexico.

The 28 year old sailor was sailing in around 30kts of southwesterly wind and big seas and had just moved into third place in the 53-strong division when the mast broke at around 0430 CET (0330 UTC).  He is uninjured and has secured his boat but will wait until daylight to make a more comprehensive evaluation of the damage. He reported to Race Direction that he will make his way to Brest, some 300 nautical miles to the east.

A lot of boats are going for shelter without specific issues to let the low pass, but not sure when they will be abe to restart with what is following (2 or 3 more lows).

You can get nice summaries on below page (but in French ) :

Looks like Tripon on the Chcolat 50 is going to sneak south of all the crap and keep going. Fair play to him after a brilliant start.

En Imoca, le skipper de Pure-Famille Mary, Romain Attanasio, 16e, a une avarie (voiles endommagées, casquette roof cassée) et  fait route vers la Bretagne pour tenter de réparer.

Sail and roof damage according to google.

His j3 exploded and it broke the main hook (not sure why or how)

Tough decision frop Lalou on Arkema

Taking shelter while being in the lead.

He is the most experimented multi50 skipper in the fleet I think, so it must be really hell on water
