Imagine those winch handles spinning backwards with the energy of the main sheet driving them. I suppose it would over ride and foul the winch eventually?

And this is different from the Tour de France how?
Duh? "Tour" ... Not 2 weeks in one place. Even today the twats tried to stop me getting to the marina to photograph a boat I have for sale, and then likewise to have lunch with a client. I do not want the event to stop, just a bit better planning and more effort to make locals feel like they are still wanted.

Chalie Dalin is in another class. He doesn't even need a new boat. Great racing in the Ultim between Charles, Armel and Francois. Yoan Richomme in the Class 40 has had a shocker not aware of boat issues but he is 26nm behind the leader which in the 40 class is a long way.

Regarding OCS, maybe the publicity of being in the front row means more for the sponsors than the 4 hr penalty? Seems unneccessary yo be early in a 1-2 week race.
Looks like the 40's were kinda pushed over in lump, don't want to bear off across bows, don't really want to get rear ended. I expect if you realize you're early with a big buck behind you it's probably safer just to go. Probably not going to start doubling back like you would in a rented sunfish

I was referring to the similar structure of having a private money-making organization scoop up lots of public space and public resources for their own benefit.

But, hey, we have the NFL and the world has FIFA so these guys are relative pikers.

^^^Exactly - cracking off a bit can get you a much better VMG even though it looks fugly on the tracker!!!
Even back in the paleolithic, the upwind VMG polars of a Hobie 18 was absolutely flat between 45° and 60°. Footing or pointing barely made any difference at the weather mark.

Yes in some boats, in windward/leeward racing with no current, it can also be a wash.

In other boats, cracking off a few degrees can be the difference between foiling and not foiling.

In both cases, in point-to-point races, it can also get you to a favourable wind or current shift faster.

So it really depends on quite a few factors!

The official news from Sam’s facebook page;

🚨 NEWSFLASH

Whilst trimming the sails on his Ocean Fifty Leyton during the start phase of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe today, Sam Goodchild suffered injuries to his arms and face.

A technical issue led to kickback when winching, resulting in the winch pedestal handles brutally slamming into Sam. He was evacuated from the boat and taken to the hospital by the doctors. He has been able to see his loved ones.

It is with deep regret that he has been forced to retire from the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe.

Great start
I was happy for the footage and english commentators however they could barely keep up with that crap directing which saw the cameras jumping from one shot to the next ..... pretty bad IMO
How about a little betting game ?

I have set up a file :

Rule : Just type you SA forum name in the first column, and your bet for the winner of each class in the others.

Will close the writing access to the file just before the start.

Prize : fame ! :)

link to the file :

Edit : I don't manage to have the link displayed as a link ...
So just add "https://" to below string

Holy siht. That is a potentially ugly injury. Best wishes and so glad it happened near shore........

For a second, I thought that Francis Joyon had a technical problem and was returing to South Britany... but now, it seems to be a long term plan to get as far South as early as possible. Right?

Today the race committee must decide wether Caudrelier has jumped the line or not (Gitana team says no) :

(if yes, it's a 4 hours penalty to be done on the race course)
That's harsh, but otherwise starting procedures will be broken on purpose.
Meanwhile, Dalin heading south to get favourable winds.
