ok, small keel boat, no lifelines , on a lake if that makes a difference.. also no class rules

absolutely flat shit day on the water.. guys goes forward to fix something on the bow, on the way back to the cockpit, he grabs the outer shroud and pulls the boat to leeward i guess ( i didn't see it ) another competitor says you can't do that..

so i looked through RRS and only found that if a boat has lifelines and / or class rules you can't do that .. otherwise it seems like what he did was legal.. what say y'all ?

I'd say any small boat w/no lifelines & no class rules it's open season on hiking to ww or lw.

Class rules usually limit leverage (boards, trapeze etc)

Why should that be illegal - was it a pumping motion?

(If a boat is small enough it may be easier to get from front to back swinging outide of the shrouds than to squeeze yourself between mast and lower. I think one can do one 'accidental' pump doing this.)

Rule 42 doesn't apply (assuming there was no repeated torquing), neither does case 36 that clarifies 49.2 The sailing instructions would matter if there was anything in them that pertains, probably doubtful. If the class rules don't address it, sounds ok to me.

My best guess would be the casebook interpretation:
A kinetic technique not listed in rule 42.2 that propels the boat and is not one of the permitted actions covered in rule 42.1, is prohibited.

In college, we always took a huge dip to leeward with a hard flatten to get off the line quicker.

Probably illegal. It's a sailboat, not a row boat.

...but it's often really hard not to do that stuff. pumping and ooching often feel right. Not doing it is like leaving a sail out of trim. Hell, it sometimes is straight up leaving a sail out of trim.

Your guy may just be giving you some plausible deniability - he might have gone to "fix something on the bow" under a dont ask, don't tell policy. If he's doing that stuff enough for your competitors to notice, he is probably doing it too much lol.

If I had a nickel for every time I left a beer or my sunglasses on the other side of the boat. But soo often in light air. Weird...
