We got 2 hobie 33 sitting here in Channel Islands Harbor. I have not seen either one racing yet.
The one on the right is from Block Island, Called Topaz and has about a 3' sprit.
It seems lots of boats come here to die a slow death

I still maintain the Hobie 33 is a one-trick pony -- not that well designed or built.
With a lot of money thrown at it, the Hobie can be made to win downwind races. Throw in any amount of windward work and sailing the Hobie becomes a hate mission, dedicated to damage control -- can you make up enough off the wind to compensate for all you've pissed away upwind? Generally, the answer is "No."

Unless you plan on limiting yourself to competition which is predominantly OWC (races down to Mexico; plan on trailering north,) you're better served by a boat that at least pretends to be an all-arounder.

Don't know that I agree with you, Somebody. They have always had the reputation of being very well made boats and this one is about as perfect as it gets. I was looking at her Sunday and I doubt a fly could land and stay on her topsides or bottom. The rig is a thing of beauty to behold. I'm sure there are beaters worthy of scorn but not this one.

Topaz raced in the 2021 Bermuda 1-2 and finished 3rd in their division. The owner was also given the Sportsmanship trophy for his work keeping boats informed of some of the impending weather. He was pretty bedraggled in both directions but always had a great attitude. I knew he was moving the boat west, and I'm sure he has plans for it out there.

I remember seeing that boat for ages in Old Harbor. I think the current owner told me he put almost as much money into rehabbing it as he paid for it.
