Sad Ad: so emblematic of our sailing times

Maybe if the Americans on this thread actually did something positive rather than constantly whingeing at the death of sailing and the uselessness of USS they could turn the tide? Don’t leave it to someone else to sort your problem.
Do you have any ideas? They would be welcome. Or do you just want to carry on "whingeing" about Americans?

I solved the problem, for me.

I teach it nowadays so I’m selfrighteously humble. ;-)
Yes, I worked with two sailing programs for the past 15 years, that has been a great experience. But I don't think of it as working toward "saving sailing," it's more for the benefit of the students.

A nice neat theory, except it didn't actually. Not around here anyhow.
Agreed. The majority of windsurf/kite/foil crowd are new to windsports, not exits. Those of us that are slowly sliding... well my entire wing and foil quiver (multiple wings, boards, foils) is still less than a dinghy. For the price of 2 sails a year, I can upgrade to modern equipment in winging, instead of staying in the 70's. They also rock amazing learning apps for free from manufacturers.

If anything Dinghy sailing could take a lesson:
Free learning platforms linked and used by manufacturer to promote sales, ability to make life "better", fun in a broader wind range, less focus on racing, less yacht club more tailgates.

IMHO Dinghy sailing became capital Y yacht clubbing and that's what killed it. Still race my J22 and laser, but I foil to GTFO of the club politics. Just head out, enjoy the wind, and smile.

Basically, Have A Hobie Day works. Basically, a race to the beach party. We need more of that.

From the seller "Say Uncle is a top Henderson 30. Campaigned in Michigan she was well taken care of and stored indoors in the winter. I purchased Say Uncle in January 2020 before the Pandemic to sail PHRF locally and some offshore races. Since the pandemic sailing has died in South Florida and the boat is just sitting on her trailer waiting for the next opportunity to sail. September of 2022 t Fuel tank was drained and cleaned so it is ready for new fuel."

So here we have a perfectly good racer sitting in South Florida and no action. The risk of buying a PHRF orphan in a market saturated with them.

yeah I know the seller... handicap racing isn't dead in sfl, he was just not winning in it

Of my 10 local windsurfing/kitesurfing/wingfoiling friends, all but three still have dinghies, cats, and/or cabin boats too, and those three never did. But only two bother with handicap racing while two race one-design. Our little club does a lot of outreach and teaching, quite successfully recruiting new sailors as the old ones die off. Been here 36 years now.

It is W/L racing that is dying here. Both handicap and OD. But distance, navigator, point-to-point is more popular than 10 years ado - and most of that is handicap.
I've watched hundreds of one-design boats race dozens and dozens of W/L legs over the last 6 months, but ok.

and no, distance, navigator, point-to-point are not more popular than 10 years ago. thats completely false pretty much everywhere in the United States.

Here in Hawaii on the Big Island we now have about 75 active kids sailing toppers and Lasers in Hilo Bay. Just bought more toppers (16 total). We have 3 big boats and they are always full. On the Kona side where my boat is located, the State keeps trying to kick our racing club so they can put in a business that generates tax revenue. They will eventually grind us down. Then I guess I will move my boat to Honolulu.
