Sad news, Paul Elvstrom passed away

I posted my thoughts above, but was just thinking about PE and all he did for sailing. And I remembered that I may actually owe my life to his inventiveness. I was an idiot, immortal 20-year-old. I jumped in an I-14, single handed on a breezy Thanksgiving day on Puget Sound.

So...Thank you Mr. Elvstrom. Your genius ideas worked and I'm less of an idiot now. And certainly not immortal.
+1...I am far past 20 and still an idiot!

Too bad we "never know!" It would be good we knew...

Is there a sound as fortifying as the noise an Elvstrom bailer makes when it's just emptied out your half-full boat while hustling along on a nice hot reach ?

Any swab would take (cold shower) using hiking practice rig) lived the boat and deserved every good thing, IMHO. Be the ball...even goofy humor makes sense when you follow your bliss...all I know is no single handle boat comes close to a Finn...but I am a tad prejudice toward PE, sucking bailers, and Finns...even if they did not carry swill box. No time to swill.

There is/was a Fairey Finn for sale up in Maine or maybe Mass...wood...almost had me...and brought PE to mind...a beauty she is and with orig spar set.

An Ainslie kind of guy....Go..... team BAR.
Hardly. It would be the other way around, Ainslie is an Elvstrom guy, except Elvstrom never jumped off his boat, climbed aboard a press boat, and got physical with anyone.

People respected Elvstrom.

Seems some people have forgotten that true winners have also earned the respect of their competitors; something this class person, with ultimate manners, showed us. Respect is winning the hearts and minds, not the metal that ends up in the shelf or trash. Class act!

+1; Much respect for THE MAN. His books taught me sailing, the rules, and I've used the little boats in protests.

The image I remember, (but can't find) is the off season training he would do; He rigged up a sort of cockpit / exercise station so he could hook in and 'hike' - more like situps or crunches - lots of them. And he did it while holding a large weight on his chest.

And my favorite quote came when he was describing the Lightning (which I raced for many years): (paraphrasing)

"It's a nice boat that you can race or daysail, and it's got a really worthwhile spinnaker"

As noted above, that he used the device in a morning cold shower...his fondness for the old Lightning and its quirky tuning aside...Finn. Lightning...worlds apart even then, IMHO but then he likely uttered few criticisms outward...

+1 Might just be missing in our world...but the fault lies more with the peers who raised us to be what we are...PE did his offspring right...amen!

Be harmless. Bother none! Leave all better for being!
