except it's still operating at a significant loss
Sure. And yet, it sounds like it's within the funding plan, whatever that might be. otherwise they'd replace under-sponsored teams instead of adding a whole team. Compare/contrast Japan replaced by (who was that? Denmark, Canada?), vs the addition of Germany.

Do you have further info on their financials? Or reasons to think it's about to fall off a cliff?

Replacing teams like Japan and China reduced management's operating costs and freed up boats for paying franchisers. I forget who got which boat. Denmark is a fully funded team that PAYS annual operating and overhead fees. I think the German team is, too.
Not sure what the cost/funding balances for Spain and Canada are. I think Canada is fully funded too.
Adding fully funded teams pays into the "shared" tech costs, boat R&D costs, boat costs, and thus reduces the burden on "management's cookie jar."
The teetering ones are iirc Australia (getting more sponsors but not iirc fully funded yet/long term) and USA which somebody (maybe over the the other forum?) said Spithill was going to buy.

The funding plan = Bank of Larry. Sustainable like any billionaire's plaything. Like today's Twitter but with fewer fans.

And there you go Martin. Just as I predicted, no “inside knowledge” and no clue…as usual. He just pretends to know LarryE better than LarryE knows himself. Whatever. At least he’s comfortable being wrong.

It's supposed to have a 5 year ramp down, and while i don't think they are publishing their financials, what's externally visible is positive.

On one hand, I have no horse in the race, I'm not going to defend Larry or Russell who are big boys I'm told. OTOH, it seems pretty reasonable to me as a financial strategy; factor in a big pandemic and maybe things take a bit longer?

Do other races / leagues do something that meets your expectations or is better? Financed by NZ, Barcelona, and the House of Saud? A big check from Volvo or Edmund de Rothschild?

I truly don't mean to bash AC or VOR here (well, maybe yes AC over the Saudi adventure). Expensive sports need funding. Funding from a billionaire passionate sailor used to try and build a sustainable model seems... reasonable, even smart.

For per$pective, saw this little Van Gogh up at the Met on loan from LE collection
Very nice exhibition btw https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/van-gogh-cypresses/exhibition-objects

Even when he got it some years back, it likely cost more than an SGP team season.

The Sail GP product does not appear to pull in the same amount of money that the product costs to produce. The Sail GP looks like a hobby of a billionaire to me. Maybe even inspired by spite.
Setting up that circus and all those bitchen foilers every time has got to be a shit ton of work and expense.
Then on my end i watch 3 12 minute heats per day, speeding thru the talking parts, on youtube for free. Having no idea what most of the sponsor companies are selling.
Times have changed if that is a successful business model, but it is interesting. ESS folded with much lower expenses, showing that it isn't an easy biz. Hopefully SailGP will keep it's funding into the future.

Further, what are all those Professional Athletes do after the AC37 and its related Events are over. They have to go somewhere to earn some money, no?
What did all those professional athletes do after AC36, 35, 34, 33, 32....

Isn't the super yacht sailing scene booming these last few decades as well as getting paid to kill 1D classes?

The "will SailGP be find its footing / be sustainable" ship has sailed.

Sponsors like the time-on-the-screen / dollars ratio, which beats AC and also beats the long distance races (VOR etc) which are so long that they get summarized into 1 minute snippets in which your expensively sponsored boat might not get a mention. SGP events are made-for-tv-and-youtube, suboptimal for actual sailing but work great for the eyeballs-are-watching-your-logo metrics.

SNIP
Any entity is sustainable right up until they put locks on the front gate and invalidate staff pass cards...

Trying to make the AC a 'profitable' spectating event is stupid! Creating mini AC classes to fill 'space and time' in hopes of more eyeballs is stupid.

Ding Ding Ding! And the AC needs to stay in its lane. The AC teams should be required to field F50s in SGP and be done with the silly prototype mini AC classes.

Just adding a team doesn't mean they will be celebrating a 6th season... It's just another team for season 4.

WTF is up with GBR being the only sponsored named team? How far is Emirates $ up Ben's ass???

Why not Oracle United States SailGP Team or Rockwool Denmark SailGP Team?

Isn't it Rockwool? Thought so. But Oracle is either unknown or hated, lol. It has some business practices customers dislike intensely but they are stuck. Also they overpromise.

Edit: it's "Denmark SailGP Team Presented by Rockwool" on their social media. Logo has Rockwool on it

The TP52 Super Series are bad! They not create any revenue at all. The TV Production is bad.

There will be a 5th and 6th Season.

Because Ben has secured Emirates as a Title-Team Partner. Neither Rockwool or Oracle did that. It shows you how talented Ben Ainslie is securing Sponsorship Deals.

I did the tech start up sales thing in Silicon Valley. I know a few ex - Oracle sales folks from the early, early days. Every quarter the bottom 10% of sales were shown the door, regardless of previous performance.

It took years to get the Db to actually work as advertised. They so screwed up an Educational vertical launch that they paid the sales people as if they had hit quota for that year!

Love or hate LE and Oracle but most of those early reps I met were ORCL millionaires....

Bad for who and when did the 52 Series need to be profitable to afford worldwide coverage?

So, eventually all the teams will be sponsor named and replace national teams?

How can SGP be the F1 of sailing when it's country oriented and more restricted than IndyCar?

Where's the magic?

The peak of participation in our sport was well before the internet.

Just saying....
