Sailing hardware IN SPAAAAACE!!!

Saw this today on the NASA web site. Notice the Wichard shackle on the camera:

Do they use regular jack lines too?

I love seeing boat hardware in odd places. I saw a 12V distribution panel in HALO 3. The circuit labels were readable. Navigation lights. Masthead light. etc.

About 15 years ago I used a bunch of Harken blocks and shackles to do a ship structural model test for the Navy. Worked great.

And NASA probably paid $5,000 for it.

Perhaps they could have used one of those when the $100,000 tool bag drifted away last year with two grease guns and a putty knife in it. Fortunately they didn't lose the duct tape and were able to make it home safely.

And the old US Navy MK-V swift boats had Harken mid-range pin-stop track & cars on the bottoms of the seating so they could be moved fore & aft depending on the troop & equipment loadout.

The North Sails loft on Kent Island makes storage lockers for the Space Station out of sailcloth IIRC.Back in the day astronauts took a boatpole to Skylab to push a solar array into place.

I thought Johny Mo(ran) made them in Eastport, for North, with fire-retardant cloth supplied by NASA.

The space bags were cool. Used all over the Shuttle. Sleep in them, stow stuff in them, expandable, contractible: a soft luggage interior.

Wichard makes parachute rigs. I'm not certain but my memory says they did that before branching into marine uses, so aero engineers would probably be familiar with Wichard.

I seem to recall that back in the 80s, NASA made extensive use of Harken traveller track and cars for positioning and moving items around in the shuttle's cargo bay. I looked, but could not find any pics, so maybe it didn't happen...

The cord you pull to request a stop runs through a Harken cheek block on most SF Muni buses.
Only Harken hardware can stop a San Francisco bus!

It is for sure the best part of the whole public transportation system. Which makes you wonder: which Anarchist works for MUNI?
