Sailors Missing in Chuckanut Bay

Linky

Anybody have any more details? This was Thursday night when that windstorm came through. The boat looks kind of like a Geary 18. It sounds like the two who didn't swim for it didn't make it--unusual outcome given that the standard wisdom is to stay with the boat.

Nobody had a PFD. Too bad.

Condolences to the families.

Sad news and thoughts go out to friends and family.

Yet another tragedy which was likely preventable? ... no life jackets, late at night (after midnight) and 6 people on a 18 footer in a strong wind?

Sadly from what the story didn't say and from what I know of the B'ham music scene, I'll lay odds booze was involved, and I wouldn't be surprised if the men were more inebriated than the women.

It is sad, and preventable (at least to some extent). No PFDs clearly played a part. It's extraordinary that four made it to shore in that water. Still, those of you who are local may recall how fast the wind came up on Thursday night/Friday morning. (It woke me up out of a sound sleep.) Sure, if they had checked the forecast they should have seen that. It appears to me that they were thinking that the weather had been pretty nice for a few days and they expected it to stay fairly calm, then they got hit by a sudden gale.

Very sad.

The article (or maybe the TV news) did mention that alcohol may have been involved, but was not conclusive.

Boomberries: do you know the boat? Was it a Geary 18? That's not a good boat for six people to be in when the wind hits hard. And it can't handle any real waves.

the herald today said that the coast guard had suspended the search.

I was down at chuckanut bay canoeing on friday afternoon and saw a C.G. cutter crusing out from Goveners Pt., dot island and Clarks Pt. Also there was a heli flying around the inner bay.

The reports that I heard on Friday was that there were the six and that beer/liquor WAS involved. There was a pic of the boat laying on her side in the paper. Four made it to shore and two didn't. Too bad.

That storm rolled in real quick and real late... wonder what they were doing out at 1am except drinking.

Sudden storm, wrong boat, too many people, no gear and possible alcohol. A deadly combination in 52F water. Unfortunate for the families...

Doesn't look like a Geary, there's a cabin house on it.

That is quite a reach, BB.
+1

no sense adding insult to injury

I don't think it's quite a reach or insulting, just an observation. Midnight, 6 adults, a dog and a small boat with no pfds and no precaution.

pretty small boat for six people and a dog, winds reported at 25-30, dark night, nasty short waves along the shore, inexperienced crew. A bad deal all around. My sympathies to the families involved. The two men missing were well known in the local music scene, and will be missed.

Fair winds from now on guys.
