SDYC I-14 training weekend Jan 21-22, 2012. Introduce new and currrent sailors to 14 sailing. Will have coach boats and transfer boats to get people on the water and into boats. Several experienced 14 sailors to offer assistance and encouragement. Come see what you're missing. Bring wetsuits, life jackets, harness' if ya got 'em, and a good attitude. We plan to have numerous boats present to see variations of this exciting development class.

If you are in San Diego, like sailing and don't mind getting wet, go for a sail on a 14! Even if you have no intention of ever buying or campaigning one, you will have a good time that you will not soon forget. Besides that, they always have a lot of good beer.

So true, Admiral Jack. It seems 14 sailors have great taste in both boats and beer. No 4ktsb and no bud light. I plan on being there, probably without the Shu2 though. (will I ever finish?)

im on a boat!
Just for kicks, we have a Snipe regatta in Mission Bay that weekend. On Saturday night, there will be a LAS VEGAS NIGHT to benefit the Junior program and for us to have fun. Pretty sure it's only like $5 to get in and open to all. Come on down 14er's, we love chines too!

Some people reading this thread might opine that these boats can cost 30k and more...and they would be right, but there is a bunch of really competitive good boats available right now in North America.

You don't need the best boat to be competitive, ask 70+ year old Alan Laflin or me, Allan Johnson, sailing with garage built Henderson 1164 (now for sale for 10k), you just need to stay upright around the course...

Just coming on the market is Kris Bundy's old Bieker 3, that he won the Beer, England worlds in...solid boat, could be had for less than a laser (about 5k)

With the t-foil rudder the boats have become very manageable downwind, which is where they used to cartwheel. The fleet is fun and the sailing is amazing, even if you are alone. Try it out.

Sounds great! Do you have any additional information in response to the posted questions in the comments on the I14usa.org website (copied below) ? I'd like to make the trip down from up North, but the same Qs are outstanding for me.

Also, what level of proficiency is req'd to make it worthwhile, realistically?

Comment by John Clark yesterday: Hey Brad. The event sounds fantastic. Can you tell me a bit more about the event - mainly cost and times each day? I'm in SF, but would love to come down for the event. Been looking for an opportunity to learn to sail an i14. Thanks. -John

No cost, but some of your local micro brew beer will make you more popular. You really don't need a high level of sailing proficiency to participate, that is something you will develop as you sail 14's. Just go and have a good time. I won't be there as I am 10,000 kilometers away, but if I was in San Diego you couldn't keep me away. Actually, I think my 14 will be there without me.

Buck,

I previously responded directly to the prior response. This clinic is directed towards new skiff sailors, however there will also be more experienced 14 sailors there as well. No prior skiff experience is required, we will be doing dry land exercises, looking and discussing rigging, various boat set ups, rig tune, footwork through the boat etc. we'll then head out on the water and get everyone sailing. There is no cost for the clinic. (as Jack said, some good beers will go a long way at the end of the day) Bring a wetsuit, life jacket, and harness if you have one, otherwise we'll get you set up. There are several places to stay in Point Loma, check SDYC.org and they may have some links, there are expensive to cheap places available. We'll start around 0800 each day and go until people are done, or the light are turned off. Hope that answers some of your ?s. as Pete said there is 14 sailing at RYC, but do come down for this clinic. I hope to do an intermediate clinic later on.

Thanks BWR, Jack, Pete M for the replies and extra info. I will take a closer look at logistics and see if I can swing it - beers across borders (would be coming from Canada) and all. Sounds great.

Buck, we have 3 14's sailing out of Richmond on a regular basis and one, possibly two charter boats available real soon. I would be happy to get you out for a ride. We'll be racing the midwinters out of Richmond (ryc.org) in February and March. Shoot me a message and we can figure out the logistics. In the mean time, get down to San Diego for Brads clinic!

Cheers

Chris

Thanks for the msg Chris and generous invitation. Apologies to all for the confusion: I'm based in Ontario - the ambiguity arose when I re-posted 'John Clark's' question from the I14 website comments which were similar to my own questions - I was asking Brad whether anyone had answered that query already (which he had).

That being said, I'm enthusiastic despite the distance, but still trying to navigate feasibility of making the (longer) trip down.

I'll be in touch if I can swing it.

Thanks again
