Shed a tear for GGYC

Tragically, I'm still hanging around SA... must get on with the day though - celebration drink down at the viaduct later this morning methinks...
Haha. Yes! Though an Oracle supporter myself (less so when they moved to BDA, but still) I am super stoked for you guys. Enjoy the win and have a great time with the celebration!

Think twice about trolling the GGYC, especially if you weren't here in 2013. Heck even more to the point, if you WERE here in 2013.

Around the time Oracle was falling out with StFYC, our Commodore asked one of the local loft managers, whose decades in the local sailing scene gave us some valuable insight. Should we approach Larry Ellison about being his sponsoring club? "Not if you want to keep your club." was the response. When the very similar GGYC (no blazers, just a bunch of folks who like messing about on sailboats) landed the big fish, I was relieved-- my buddy in that club had been telling me for a couple of years about the financial problems they were facing.

Then DoGzilla did its thing.

How well would your sailing club handle being the fulcrum of the longest-running sporting event on the planet? Could your group keep itself together through the media glare and controversy that come with the AC circus landing on your doorstep? During the entire AC34 cycle, anytime our club had anything to do with the event or GGYC, they were still the first-rate folks we knew from before the Oracle agreement, and they continued to be as we worked with them to provide youth sailing opportunities on SF Bay.

They might not have been running the AC campaign, but the last seven years have no doubt challenged the GGYC as few other clubs have been challenged and they've come though it with an inspiring degree of class and grace.

Bravo, GGYC!

If you look at the teams that have "lost" the cup in recent history then Oracle are at the head of the pack.

1987 Australia showed they could organise a party but not a defence (4-0)

1995 Conner taking another team's boat and is still shit. (5-0)

2003 Team New Zealand were just cringe worthy. Hola, blue bucket broken mast etc.(5-0)

2010 Alinghy bought a knife to a gun fight. (2-0)

In fact Oracle and Conner back in 1983 are the only loosing defenders ever to have won a race in the AC that they lost.

That may be true, but to suggest that they won't be emotional is not.

Every Oracle fan will be feeling similar pains as the ETNZ fans did 4 years ago.
I guess that there are sailors, sailing fans, and Oracle fans.

Sailors and fans of sailing will be plenty happy with ETNZ's victory. Perhaps the true loser is Chicago - they may have a wait before the big show comes calling again.

And I suppose the sheer irony of Chicago as a player motivated the post.  Still, +1 to GGYC, and may fair winds blow.

Not sure that the raw statistics tell the underlying stories very well. Or, perhaps they do, and it was only Larry's relentless drive towards commercialism that kept his defender richer than the contestors.

Of all those races listed above - in which were the defenders deemed favorites before the gun went off?

We have to thank Russell for the show, not GGYC
+10

The Match score was lopsided as is normal in AC History but the racing was for the most part truly terrific. All things told RC, with LE's support, put on a second consecutive good AC. They almost lost their first multi-Challenger Defense convincingly, and then lost the next one convincingly.

Here's hoping ETNZ will be bold enough to brave as fair and competitive a challenge.

I think that's right. I hold no ill will to Oracle, but lost interest when "GGYC" defended in Bermuda.

I never watched the prelim stuff. And I used to be VERY interested in the AmCup stuff, and attended a few days in SF.  Didn't ever think of going to Bermuda. Ok, that's not really fair to Bermuda, as I live near SF, still.  I've been to Bermuda and had no desire to go there to watch.

Now, however, I'm putting Auckland on the family calendar.

I have only traveled within CA for AC action - but yeah, I hear you.  For the first time I feel some motivation to go abroad for the Cup.

PS: The prelims had some great racing!

The most races needed to win any previous cups was 5.  If Oracle had kept to this, they would have lost 5-0 in both this and the previous cup.
Same thing to the media spouting on that Spithall has equalled the number of AC race wins of Russel Coutts.  Counting races per event =/= event wins.
Coutts still has the best win record of anyone in the AC.

2003.

I don't think many genuine enthusiasts deemed Oracle favourites before the racing started this time around either.
not favorites perhaps - but all the more credit to ETNZ.

My point was that Oracle undoubtedly did not starve for resources, as might be said for the defender in general (with exception of Alinghi I suppose). Billionaires change everything - but you've got to hold their interest.

Regarding GGYC, it has both thrived and stymied as the holder of the Cup.  In their best moments they had a gorgeous club full of people and the hottest tickets in town.  In their lesser moments, they are held hostage by the strength of the voting members from OTUSA (or threat of vote) which keeps the same leadership in place, and as a result, their growth as a yacht club has lagged behind their peers. As a member bonus, they screened the AC on tv and charged their own members $50 to swing by and watch racing.  While the rest of the clubs in the area showed it for free.  Hope this AC change of hands brings the ggyc back to Yachting. I think the RNZYS knows well how to handle it.

THERE was a young lady of Niger

Who smiled as she rode on a Tiger;

They came back from the ride

  With the lady inside,

And the smile on the face of the Tiger.
