Still a few all band radios around …do some goggling . 125 to 200 $

my brother recently bought a Crane Skywave portable .  He is happy with it . This is a high quality ,  compact radio

the problem with shortwave is the reduction in broadcasts available  …budget cuts and the internet have killed them off

BBC World service is very sparse these days

best ask a radio amateur for schedule and frequency advice

Sangean and Grundig and Sony all used to make nice ones. But I agree, not many broadcasts any more. Canadian World Service changed to streaming broadcasts over the internet long ago.

Just download a bunch of interesting podcasts and listen on your phone or other device.

I bought a Drake SW radio from C. Crane years ago. C. Crane even threw in a free portable antenna.

Numbers stations, Radio Pyongyang with it's classic commie propaganda, some wierdo bragging about his success with the ponies than begging for money the next minute, all with a hypnotic music background etc.

Yup, been reading up on it and seems broadcasts have basically vanished. Sad, we got most of our unbiased news from BBC in South Africa back in the day when the Nationalist government controlled SABC, was hoping something like that still existed.

swling.com/blog/ is the place to go for shortwave info.  I have a Tecsun pl-380 I've been happy with.  I bought my father in-law the C.Crane Skywave non ssb like the one that Slug suggested and was impressed.  SSB will get you weather downloads (if they still broadcast it) and listening in on some amateur (ham) radio bands.
