The joy of -4kts.

Under sail_.jpg

-4kts could be an acquired taste.

I don't remember feeling -4kts when I was younger. There was always a quest for more violence under sail; spray, bar tight sheets and sails, whipping tiller or wheel, crazy water.

These days the joy is more in steady, quiet, and sure. Imagining the boat parting the water gently and sewing it up again in a smooth wake through calm water.

You never run out of crazy water anyway.

One day, on our annual vacation up in the San Juans, I decided to sail to the next place and say, screw worrying about getting a good slip or spot to anchor. We were going to enjoy the journey. Drifted at times, hit 4ks at times, made lunch, played UNO with kids.
I am really trying to shut off the Type A that I am at work. Hard to do, for me.
When we did get to Deer Harbor and sat at anchor, the kids were so stoked about sailing the whole way. Even through the Wasp Islands! Magical...
I try to do this more and more. I mean, WTF, it is a sailboat. Summertime in the SJs can be very challenging to actually sail in.

Much nicer than the alternative. ;)

It was nine years ago when we went around in August I think we departed Sines the day before. Had a great night sail with the asail up. We watched the cliffs all the way. Small dolphins all around. Didn’t know about the big wave surfing there until I watched it on cable years later. Had a great time all the way down the coast.

10-year-old photo. 1/25th of a second @ F22mm: slowest shutter speed possible in the strong light through a 10mm focal length.

I must have braced the camera on the sheet winch to keep it so sharp.

I've been working on upping my photo and video skill to better capture 'sail' this coming season.

1/25 shutter gives a great sense of sailing motion (I notice here).

So I assume you have the camera fixed to the boat some how; not shooting handheld? (I'm not steady enough for anything below 1/60)
I would have braced it on the forward winch top.

I bought a shorter tripod (adjusts from about 8" to 20") this winter with sailing in mind. It'll hold DSLR or iPhone so I intend to try it for photos and video.

Check out the Bogen Superclamp. I bought one many years ago and haven't had a chance to use it on Kolibri yet. I'll do so when I sail this Sunday and post a few pics. In the meantime check out this one from many years ago. f/11 @ 1/10 sec. Car speed was ~15 mph or ~13 knots. Canon 1Ds with a 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens.
