My boat was built in Canada. All Robertson screws with only a couple of exceptions where I expect they were replaced at some point. Boat came with a good selection of tools that included the Robertson drivers. I have come to love them. Brought a box assorted sizes in stainless steel to keep aboard, no more Phillips head for me.

How many did you strip?
maybe one but not totally, but it came out, i got the necessary ones out with a philips so I could remove the sole.. reminder, if you don't pump out your boat regularly or keep the bilge pump battery charged, check your wood... it's gone from a quick and dirty job to it's going to cost a few boat bucks to get it fixed.. which reminds me , it's time to sand and varnish the wood again on my boat.. also, if you strip a screw head, take the time to remove it instead of leaving it for the next guy...

A friend of mine asked me to build something for him out of wood. He is a good friend but not a GREAT friend (like, geez, I don't mind spending a few hours putting something together but a few beer in return would be nice). I will build stuff for him. But I will use up my supply of very old slot screws in the construction. Am I evil?

The reason that Robertson screws do not predominate is due to the fact that he would not license them. He had been screwed (;)) in a business deal by an English syndicate and it soured his trust in agreements.

One story said Henry Ford wanted to use them in his cars but because Robertson would only sell them to him and not give him a license it meant that Phillips got the contract and the rest is history.
Robertson couldn't patent the screw head because of prior art. He patented a machine that cold-formed the screws, that patent expired in 1928.

I remember that Robertson didn't want to pay american lawyers to deal with Ford, thought they were all on the take (and probably wasn't far off). Apparently Ford used robertson heads in Canadian plants were there was plenty of supply, but without a license agreement they could not be guaranteed for american supply needs so philips it was.

If you were truly evil, you would use a combination of slotted screws, Phillips head screws, Robertson screws, Torx screws, and Frearson screws. All of them slightly cammed out.
