Well my son and his family had some drama, business not family, and couldn't make it up. Which is too bad because the season is getting off to a very good start. Everything on the front side of Copper was open and skiing nicely. Parts of the backside were open but my old man early season legs were perfectly happy warming up on blue groomers.

East Coast (Southern VT) Report: The local elementary school's thursday ski school program starts tomorrow, with about 10 decent runs left open on the mountain after 2 weeks of above freezing temps and rain. Finally splurged on season tix and preferred parking passes for wife and I this year, and have gotten in 4 days so far, two of them excellent. Mud season in January sucks.

Rocked my new edged xc skis playing around in the park this morning. Still a bit thin I guess. Whoops.

Clean: Stratton or Snow?

Season passes are a game changer. At least for me. I just skied 6 days in a row, took today off like an idiot. One day it was snowing so hard and wet I lasted three runs and came back to cabin and took a bath. I have never been so wet and cold. Yesterday I skied 5 runs in an hour on 4 inches of new on top of groomed runs and the place was deserted. Being near the hill is awesome. Fuck the gym.

I might need to start getting season passes for the local again. Stopped a few years ago after a couple bad winters. The new digital passes for the lifts have made slipping a $20 to the lifty in the morning to get to backcountry terrain for the day less viable.

Season passes at Taos pay out very quickly, I buy mine at the end of the season, assuming I'll be alive to use the next one. Price is lowest of the year.

Everyone should do a heli trip at least once. 18,000 vertical feet before lunch is pretty common.

I have an in at Wiegeles and he is planning for us to go up 23/24 if his knee replacement and rehab happens as planned. I give it a 20% chance of success at this point. I am almost on top of the powder skiing with my newer fatter skis. My buddy says that they have a bunch of skis for us to use that are bigger and fatter if we make it up there.

With all the storms on the west coast, I'm having problems getting out when the mountain is actually open top to bottom. Don't want to do the 4 hour + drive to ski the bunny slopes and wait in 30 minute lines because they only have 10% of the lifts open.

First world problems for sure.

Mikaela Shiffrin just tied Vonn's record for world cup wins. What a bad ass athlete.
Won't be long and she will own the record.
I have watched her entire career almost and a bunch of other skiers as part of the deal. She is a naturally incredible skier. I think it’s a zen thing her form, rythym and course reading. Of course she works hard and is fit for sure but she makes it look so smooth and easy.

I'm just back from 3 weeks in Hokkaido, Japan. Absolutely brilliant.

Lots of snow, this was one night's contribution, the car was clean the evening before.

finally back up on the I70 corridor! 3 days up at WP and another 6 split between Vail and BC. heading back east to check on boats and house for a week or so then back out. Heading down to Crested Butte for a week, then Utah and Idaho.. will finish up the season back here in Vail. my patched together lung seems to be working pretty well but the legs are outa shape after a couple years off the hill...
