Seriously, he was briefly in the military and so he knew how to act military and the NSA was good with that.

The tech world is rife with gifted autodidacts. Demonstrate the talent and nobody gives a rip about credentials.  The NSA is known for its ace team of counter hackers, many of whom earned their stripes in their Mom's basement.

Rather than an autodidact, I rate Snowden as a dilettante who got the NSA job on posture (military bearing if you prefer) and then got trained up on the tools. Once he had that clearance though, it was his union ticket. He’d always have work. Unimpressed.

Snowden, 39, fled the United States and was given asylum in Russia after leaking secret files in 2013 that revealed vast domestic and international surveillance operations carried out by the US National Security Agency, where he was a contractor.

US authorities have for years wanted Snowden returned to the US to face a criminal trial on espionage charges.
