The job I was at??? 60-70 work weeks doing manuql labor as an exempt manager without overtime,in clear violation of the law. When I complained? Hire a lawyer they said. So I can spend a shitton of money on a lawyer and spend the next 2 years of my life fighting or as you say, just get another job. And when there isn't another job that wl support my family? Dunno, I live in a different country with different labour laws but I used to take complementary time off for OT hours and my GF used to just switch her work phone off when she finished for the day. Not being actually paid to be on call 24/7, don't do it.

My boss used to hate me taking comp time but he knew that a) legally he was on thin ice and b) replacing me would be difficult. So - had to suck it up.

In a free society, there is no "privilege." There is just free people interacting with eachother. I can't force anyone to work for my business. I can only pay them a wage that his high enough to get them to voluntarily agree to work for me. Nor can I force anyone to buy my product. I can only get money from customers by offering a product that they value at a price that they accept.

Why were workers worth relatively more 50 years ago?

In 1972 the majority of USA households had one income. Yet they could afford education, health care, housing, cars with fins, actually buying a ticket to go into a theater to watch movies, etc etc.

Households with 2 or 3 or 4 or more incomes cannot afford any of those things, they can barely afford food.
