Yep, no harness, no lifejacket.  Those were the days.
It's amazing we all survived sailing in the 70's, 80's, 90's with no lifejackets, harnesses or helmets...

I don't recall hearing of many fatalities or even serious injuries, just bumps and bruises.

I was in 3 different races that suffered fatalities back then - it happened. 2 MOBs and one heart attack.

BTW - I had a Red-White-and-Blue chute back then.

I stand corrected...were you doing Whitbreads?  I remember hearing of a heart attack in one of the early Whitbread races, a really young guy too.

My 1980 chute was a tri-radial.  Dark Blue, light blue, white.  In 1981,  I did sew a tri- radial competitor's chute- it was red, orange, and yellow.
