Spinnaker Staysail ( Symmetric kite)

We are considering putting a spin staysail on our SJ320 (32ft racer cruiser) 

Currently running fractional kites around 70m2 ( cant go masthead due to the rig)

We currently have a pad eye about 1.25m back from the bow ( J of 3.5m) but feel we will need something further forward

The question is will it work on something this small?  I know some ½ tonners run them.

We are planning on sheeting it to the shroud base then either back to the primaries or to a cleat,

And to hoist it on the jib halyard,

Do they need a furler or is it a nice to have for gybes?

but it looks like you're set up for dip pole gybes?

Depends on how long your races are and the course configuration, but it could be a big pain in the arse to douse and get out of the way before gybing?

When I asked Ronan G at North this question for Wee Bear (a bit smaller than your SJ320 at 9.2m LOA / 3.35m J) he said it was probably too small to worry about, at least inshore. If you look at SF3300s / Dehler 30s etc the J/LOA ratio is much higher.

Thats sort of my thought, 
our J is small vs a more modern design so i do wonder if it will just sit there, however our Main vs Jib areas are slightly skewed.

Dip pole on a 32' fractional rig? I guess you love abusing your foredeck crew. End for end, way easier, faster, less spagetti. 

And you can still run guys if you want to in big breeze if you're more comfortable with that. We don't, but its possible.

what I did sometimes on the J30 was hoist the #3 about 2/3s the way up. achieved the same effect and was easier to deal with when we had to gybe. but it was a rare occasion that we'd do this. had to know we'd be on same point of sail for a long time. 

The benefit gained by a staysail is usually more than offset by the pain in the ass of putting it up and distracting from kite trim in the process.. 

totally not worth the trouble on anything other than a distance race.

We use one on a Farr 30, works well in mid range breeze on longer courses.  Bowman hates the damn thing.

You would need to switch to end-for-end, otherwise the disruption and forward weight of hoisting and dousing every gybe is going kill any speed benefit you find.

Just do it.

It's easier than you think: your mast person can do with Foredeck

  • Get a turtle for the staysail, with the tack shackle emerging from the bottom, load sail with head and clew at top.



    This keeps the turtle aligned to your sail and ready for hoist/douse without being in the way.

[*]Snap tack to your pad eye, turnbuckle base or track car as you setup before rounding, lead sheets appropriately

[*]To Hoist Pop the top of the turtle (Bungee in cover over a round continuous ring in bag or velcro flaps )


  • Attach halyard, sheet(s) and hoist

[*]If you need to douse, let sheet fly, and drop in to turtle, cover if boisterous


  • remove sheet/halyard if needed

[*]Gybe your kite as you see fit, either dip through open fore triangle, or end for end behind the eased staysail

[*]move tack to new location as needed

[*]re-attach halyard/sheet(s) if needed repeat as needed



We run a Mizzen Staysail: which is rigged and used like this:

  • halyard is doubled ended around the backstay to mizzen masthead
  • Sheet is continuous, double ended from double cleat on Mizzen boom, to mizzen boom end blocks, lead forward around all of the mizzen shrouds
  • Sheet is clipped to halyard, which is clipped to lifeline at forward Mizzen shroud when not in use.
  • Turtle is tacked to weather side of boat before hoist


    Deep reach to aft lower shroud chainplate (shackle replaced clevis pin)
  • mid reach to working jib sheet track
  • close reach to pad eye on cabin top

[*]when ready to hoist, i.e. following tack/gybe at weather mark


  • Pass leeward halyard & sheet to "mast" person
  • they attach to head and clew
  • Hoist at mizzen mast (often the helm if short crewed


    Note the sail is sheeted to mizzen boom end,
  • tacked to weaher
  • hoisted to mizzen masthead on leeward side,
  • Flying Across the mainsheet.

[*]trim at cleat under Mizzen boom



[*]When you need to gybe, just dump sheet and halyard, stuff in turtle, clip halyard and sheet together. pass back behind main sheet/boom end



Note that a window in your staysail will be a gift to your helm.

... and please get your forward hand to stand to leeward of the forestay when gybing.  I know the gear is pretty small but a pole in the face hurts.

Thanks all, boat is dip pole due to the length of the pole, we have gotten used to it now and fine it quicker( just out preference

so it seems to be mixed opinions then!

Basically yes it’s faster on longer legs

ill get it on order then for cowes week this year.
