Star Wars Rebels - Doomed by Displacement

It seems the rebel fleet is an unlikely match for the Imperial Fleet. The rebel ships all seem to be moderate to heavy displacement keelboats, At least some have bulb keels, but I didn't see any canters. By virtue of the massive wealth of the emperor, the Imperial fleet seems to be large light displacement skiffs and lots of small foilers with variable wings. It's plain to see whose going to win this race.

Seems vaguely familiar to me.........

Now they're really screwed; they're liveaboards. They'll get kicked out of every system they try to make a home in.

Read some Ian Banks, pretty cool description of sailing race by balancing magnetic vs gravity forces..... cant remember which book

Read some Ian Banks, pretty cool description of sailing race by balancing magnetic vs gravity forces..... cant remember which book

The Algebraist, I think, if you are talking about the gas giant sailing.

You're right it was gas giants....

But I think there may be a way of making it work in vacuum..... may take a bit of working out,

Nope! Solar sails are what the cool kids are talking about:

Don't want to tack too close to the mark, tho, as pressure increases as the inverse square of distance ... and you might be incinerated.

Look -- the Rebel program was operating from dispersed locations & on a limited budget. The Empire could draw on its deep pockets and hire all the best designers, with centralized planning & testing opportunities like the Alderaan NOODs. Their crews were full-time pros & they wore matching kit (thanks, Mark!). While the Rebel ships were mostly manned by volunteers in mis-matched flight suits on a sort of 'sail what ya brung' basis. Most of the Rebel skippers & crews had day jobs, like smuggling, desert salvage, subsistence farming, or tearing people's arms off. It's not fair ... but remember, in space no one can hear you moan.

Guessing you're talking Rogue One and not the "Star Wars Rebels" cartoon series. That said, the Rebels do have at least one variable wing craft, although there is some debate among the truly weird as to whether it's a starfighter or fighting transport.

No idea what it rates.

I read somewhere that George Lucas was tapped to direct the Rogue One sequel.

Hmmm. You think it is possible life on early Earth was seeded by a lump of frozen holding tank matter pumped overboard from a passing alien spaceship?

It's as rational explanation as any other I have heard.

Have you never noticed the similarity between a comet and 'yellow' ice from an aircraft.

Both are frozen lumps with some level of bacteria...... what more do you need to know.
