nice for the fishes that they kept the underwater exterior lights on.

I guess the owners can look at it from a positive POV that its not gonna sink where its at.

One of the prettiest pieces of coastline in the entire State. I hope damage to the reef and surrounding waters can be contained. That's not an owner-skipper-had-a few-too-many-cocktails screw up. That boat would have a pro skipper and crew. WTF?

From what I am told, the hired captain was not aboard, but the owner and family - and the pros are now working hard to get it off before anything leaks. Boat was JUST brought out here a couple months ago, ugh.

As I hear it they moored on the day use site, were told it was not for overnight and they were too big for it to hold, broke loose. Folks were throwing rocks at the boat from the pali.

Do you need a permit to ask for a emergency permit to request a permit in an emergency where a permit is required?

"...In response to the increasing risk of damage to the reef and ecosystem at Honolua Bay, a marine sanctuary in West Maui, the County of Maui exercised its ability to issue an emergency Special Management Area permit that would allow equipment to access the site via the shoreline and assist in dislodging the vessel from the reef it is resting on and enable it to reach deeper water to exit the area. The emergency permit, authorized by Acting Planning Director Kathleen Ross Aoki was issued late this afternoon following discussions with West Maui Council Member Tamara Paltin and the excavation company. This action comes after attempts during an afternoon high tide failed. The State must still issue a corresponding permit for the work that also involves DLNR jurisdiction beginning at the high water mark and into the ocean..."

This is why we can't have nice things!

I don't know why this kind of attitude bothers me so much, but... it always does:

"Jones said he wasn’t warned of the rules and stayed there for two days. [nobody] contacted us ever about, ‘hey, you can’t be in this bay, you can’t hook up to an anchor here,’” said Jones.

Really? So, it's not your fault, because - as master of the vessel - you didn't bother to make even the most rudimentary effort to find out the rules for a public day-use mooring? You just tied up to it and figured it was okay, because nobody told you it wasn't?

Feh.

As I heard it random folks told them that it was day use only. They put those in for dive boats and snorkel boats. Much less load on the mooring line. They ignored them. Could have at least checked...

I find it hard to believe; he runs a charter business in Hawaii and doesn't know this? I'm a mainlander but have snorkeled there a bunch and its obvious the buoys are for day use. The ~50' cattlemaran snorkel boats are pretty much the only vessels I've seen on the buoys and that only in settled weather. IIRC you have to dive down around 10' to get the mooring pennant on the submerged buoy. Its a huge boat not a 30' Bayliner. Suspend his license.

Yup, I know all about this one. Everyone above posted most of the available details. The only thing different that I hear on docks around here is that Jones was told to leave the mooring a couple of times and he ignored them. It's still not clear if he was having engine trouble. It's also not clear if the pendant failed or if his line to the pendent failed. The latest news is that diesel is getting into the water. I believe it's from the bilge pump. I don't think the hull has breached. The bad news is the fuel crane is on Oahu and won't be here until morning. This is all I know that is not in the reports in the news.

He is super lucky that there is no swell running wrapping around the point there. That is exactly where the Legends of the Bay Surf Contest is held. If it was firing, like it can, that yacht would be in splinters.

It struck me as odd that - in one of the articles - he was quoted as saying something like "I was under the boat doing a pre-check when the mooring let go"

I don't remember ever diving under my boat in the morning to do a "pre-check"... is that common on big charter boats? Or is it likely he knew he was too big for that mooring, and was checking to see if it was dragging (or something)?
