Multihull insurance is a giant PITA.

Three years ago when we bought our F-82R we only got one quote from the five underwriters we inquired with.

Even our existing boat insurance companies, and the insurance company of the previous owner wouldn't touch it, despite no claims or anything to indicate the boat had somehow become an inherently risky proposition. The broker said most insurers "have suffered big losses due to weather etc. and are simply getting out of insuring multihulls to reduce their risk".

At the same time I find it remarkable that you can even buy insurance for a racing vessel.

In most other forms of racing (e.g. car, motorcycle) there is no insurance!!!

Don't know, but when I inquired about liability only coverage, I was told that it was not available. Insurance had to include hull coverage. This for a US based cat covering Pacific waters to Cape Spencer.

If you own your boat liability insurance is all you need. Comprehensive cover is so costly it's like progress payments on the "inevitable" claim which is actually very unusual if you are competent.
In 1980 I purchased a one year fully comprehensive, full hull value, policy including a double Atlantic crossing, crew of two for a 3/4% premium underwritten by Lloyds for a home built trimaran which was inspected for registration purposes.
Times have changed!

I’m thinking the couple with the F9A may not have done themselves a favour by posting a video on YouTube showing the sketchy condition of their boat. Their major mods planned may have been best left unsaid for now as well. I know for a fact that insurance companies do monitor that kind of thing.

I was also told by my broker that liability-only was not available from any of their underwriters.

In Australia 3rd party liability is required for entering and staying at marinas. I’ve heard that some owners have been able to get 3rd party only coverage but most insurance companies insist on full comprehensive cover which inc, ludes 3rd party.

My homeowner's policy covers boats (maybe it was only sailboats) 26 ft and under, with less than a 10 hp engine. I needed proof of insurance for my marina. The homeowners policy was sufficient. I truly have no idea what is covered, but my personal concern would be liability should the boat be blown over and damage a really expensive boat. Nobody asked at the time if it was a multihull (23 ft Tremolino trimaran).

I love how this trimaran horder (said with much respect) thread turned into one on insurance. My own for a f28r is only 3 hundred or so per year. I wonder what Stephen has to pay. Offer...I'll cover cake walk.

Hanging around Richmond today I found multihuller hard at work on BOTH of the Formula 40 cats. Is this what multitasking means, as he’s messin’ with Marstrom 32s one day in the snow and Shadow & TomCat the next day in the Bay? If anybody doubts the power of his brewing Multihull Museum / Loaner Boat plan, I’m betting it’s gonna be shittons of fun when we’re all together with him in Carolina buzzing around on cool old boats. Who’s bringing the beer?
