Very cool pic of Kraken, one of the 4 SF3300s in S2H this year. Certainly not an ordinary looking boat/design. Note the asym on the sprit and a pole.

There's two questions that pic brings up that you may be able to help me with, Rouleur;

1- Is that kite pole very skinny (because the bowsprit is going to be used in strong stuff) or is it normal in section?

2- Are those reefing points on the assy?

And a third - where can we find out more about the gear and tech that is being used in ORC/IRC doublehanders? I have raced against the owner of the leading SF3300 in this year's Hobart but he and his boat are miles away so I rarely get the chance to discuss things.

What I find REALLY weird is that Seahorse and all the other mags are ignoring this sort of tech - the stuff that is actually selling in numbers due to the popularity of IRC/ORC doublehanding - and gushing on about the stuff that almost no one sails. I'd still be buying mags if they still told me about stuff that applies to my life.

PS - one of the guys on deck, Goughie, was a top-class windsurfer and finished second or third in the worlds on foiling Moths, so he's going to be pretty chilled at those speeds. And while the SF3300 is a good boat, it's interesting to see that there's a doublehanded Northshore 38 (sort of like a skinny J/36; longer but a low-tech cruiser/racer getting close to 40 years old) with dacron sails right up with them.

Kate Cope, who helps run the UK DH Offshore Series will have a regular column in Seahorse in 2023.

Unfortunately, I know basically nothing about the boats in Australia. I am just scanning the pages looking for pics to learn a little more about how they are set up.

I am surprised they don't have a spin staysail up. Seems like the right conditions for it.

White tabs on the spi are for a take down line, not rigged. Pale patches up the luff are for velcro patches to hold the spi together when rolled up into a snake, makes for much easier hoisting.
The spi pole does look a bit skinny, but most likely it's carbon, with unknown wall thickness. Also note is is only 'J' length, so not used to project out asso's, only sym spi's. As it would only be used running, could have been made a bit lighter than a pole meant to reach

I think that the answer is the same that applies to my 3200. Below 20-24 the best VMG comes from sailing deep with a symetric, but in winds above that, then it's better to bare away and sail at angles that works for an A4

bare away = head up? Presumably you sail hotter angles with the A4, than the sym kite, yes?

My head is on wrong with downwind angles....

At 20knts, best VMG @ 170TWA. at 25knts best VMG @ 150TWA. So yes, head up and switch to A4. That's the theroy anyway. So when I need to buy a chicken schute it'll be an assy.

I was wondering whether that mean they have a lighter weight spinnaker pole because it's not going to take the loads of deep running. It's just that it looks a bit narrower in section than the usual pole I'd expect, but that could very well be just an optical illusion.

I thought from the reported wind strength and angles in this year's race the 3300 in the pic (Kraken) must be trying for VMG, but they are carrying an assy.

I've got to buy a new kite pole for my boat, which has an assy on a pole, so I'm wondering if there was a shift to lighter poles in two handers of 33-37 ft. I don't have a bowsprit/prod/dork (too much bloody hassle when anchoring etc and too many $$ for a boat that rarely races) and don't want one so I do have issues with getting the kite to project when it's just tacked to the bow.

Thanks. I've used lots of retrieval lines, but in stuff like Formula 18 cats where they are rigged very differently. Given the size of the kite and the lack of a chute, I can understand the way they run it.

I'm using my pole only to hold out assys when running, but haven't raced the boat seriously yet because my competitive stuff these days is done in small ODs. I must say I do like the pole+assy setup since you get to run deep with decent projected area and a very stable kite, but have easier (albiet slower) singlehanded gybing.

Glad to know I wasn't dreaming when I thought I saw a pic of a reefing asso. Thanks for the good information.

I can't find the ORC cert for the pictured boat but the leading 3300 is set up for symms as well as assys- and both are 10% smaller than other local 3300s. That sounds like a potent setup to me.
