I’ve met 2 steel home built sailors and both were really dedicated people. They can tell you everything about their boat and they way they were built and why they were built that way. One to sail the Alaskan coast and the other Delaware bay and the Chesapeake. Completely different in just about every way.

I have been shaking my head at this whole project along with many here for a long time.

But maybe it’s time to admit that Doug has more or less achieved his goal. His boat floats and motors relatively reliably. He has enough fans to provide manpower and local knowledge - and especially keep the kitty filled enough to continue pottering up and down the ICW for the foreseeable future.

No he won’t be heading to the South Pacific any time soon, but then he doesn’t need to.

He’ll have the occasional mishap and his critics will pile on, but he’ll just get things fixed and continue on his merry way...

Good on him, as Dylan would say

good man.

There has been a lot of flaming on this thread

I wondered when a few might start conceding tht he has achieved quite a bit - not sure what - but it is something.

He also has a TV contract now - so that must help his cash flow a bit.

A deadlight is an inside metal cover to affix when a wave breaks the glass.

He built a "sailboat" that is hopelessly badly engineered. When he raises all sails in 10 knots of breeze and makes decent forward progress then I will say he has achieved something. But not much. His boat is still a POS

I don't think that observation is incompatible with what @alphafb552 and Dylan wrote.

Sure, the boat is a POS compared to its original objectives. It wont sail, it won't go offshore, it won't be a research platform.

But it is floaty thing with an engine, which can travel the ICW and some rivers. It has fans who donate labour and cash, and it has an income stream.

Not my idea of fun, but not a complete fail.

He spent 15 years and $500K of other peoples money that he raised by scams that went so far as to even include feigning a brain injury. Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn achieved more in a month by lashing a few logs together. I’d say that our Dougie is a modern-day Duke of Bilgewater.

So who would win a boat race between the "Flyin Hawaiian" and SV Seeker??? Does Dougie have a Harley onboard?? Where's Little Murray?

So many questions

Raising lots of money from lot of suckers is a long-standing American tradition. It's the basis of the American politics business and of the American religion business, and it remains a big part of the american medicine business.

The televangelists can't deliver salvation, and the politicians have no intention of even trying to deliver on the promises they make to their retail customers. (Tho of course they deliver handsomely for their wholesale customers).

But Doug Jackson has delivered maybe 50% of what he promised, which is better than other snake oil sellers.

Doug is not my idea of a nice person, and his boat is a self-parody. But I reckon he has given better value than Jimmy Swaggart or Oral Roberts or the orange-skinned man or Mr-Change-You-Can-Believe-In.

Of course, some people will disparage the whole snake oil trade, and claim that being not-the-worst-purveyor-of-snake-oil is a low achievement. But given the centrality of snake oil to American culture, that seems a bit harsh.

The brain injury bit was way OTT for me. I basically dropped his YouTube feed after that.

As for spending other peoples' money, I expect he spent a hell of a lot of his own as well.

I just find it a mindless waste of resources including time to build such a POS when the same amount of time & money - minus the 'I know everything' attitude - could have built something really excellent.

I can't get my head around this either. Labour is the biggest part of a project like this, doing it properly would have been noise in the overall cost.

except thats NOT what doug said he would do. His "original objectives" were to built a SAILING VESSEL and use that SAILING VESSEL as a platform for ocean research. To this day he always refers to it as "sailing vessel Seeker". And yet, to this day, despite being in sailing waters for MONTHS...FOR MONTHS, HE HAS NOT FUCKING SAILED THAT FUCKING TUB...FUCK!! NOT FUCKING ONCE HAS THAT STUPID FUCKING CUNT RAISED THE FUCKING SAILS ON THAT FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT AND FUCKING SAILED...NOT FUCKING ONCE...FUCK...NOT FUCKING ONCE...FUCK.

If Doug, like Brent, had just said "hey, welding some steel together into a thing that floats and gonna live on it" then more fucking power to him...BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT DOUG DOES, HE CLAIMS HE HAS DONE SOMETHING THAT HE HAS YET TO FUCKING DEMONSTRATE...FUCK.

I believe you mean Huck and Jim lashed together a raft, the Finn and the Slave, both outcasts from society. Tom Sawyer was a dandy that paid fare on steamboats.

My guess is he has, or has tried, to raise sail and found out what a fucking mess he has built.

Whether he raised sail or not, I'm guessing he's felt the pig start roll under his feet... list to one side... like a giant hippo about to do a complete flip-over. And it scared the shit out of him.
This guy is like the largest pit of quicksand shit I have seen in a long while. It is difficult to even imagine "the shit ever being scared out of him".....it is a forever renewable resource for him.
