why he doesn't construct […] without having to cut, weld and grind. Surely he must have seen a farm implement or two

This misses the point. A big part of Doug’s shtick is, indeed, “cut, weld and grind”. It’s grist for the audience, who say to themselves, “Well, dang! That there’s some goshdarned boatbuilding! Cut, grind and weld. Heck if I ain’t gonna go try that myself, make a boat and follow my dreams! If ya ain’t tryin’ ya ain’t doin’!”

Doug did the cut down one "batten" freehand with a skillsaw, he did a good job.

Talks about how he was inspired by dutch racing barges (which I saw someone mention here or on reddit yesterday, showing the same youtube clip) More table saw montage, nice high energy keltic music.

Doug included an invite to join the facebook group, again dishonestly suggests that being nice and being a real person with a real face are all it takes to be allowed to speak there.

Doug gets a little lost in the fog. Looks calm. Then treats us to a montage of him using ratchet straps and ladders and all kinds of things to pull the batten straight as he welds it back together with the flange in the middle.

He adds a block to the forward sail halyard for a 2-to-1 advantage, I remember him disparaging the idea as a waste of energy but I'm not going to hunt for the clip. The block he used looks very small.

Man watching him toss an antislip drawer liner under his ladder so he doesn't fall does not inspire confidence.

And he is saving the full sail raise for another video!

Well one thing is for sure-- his bogus DMCA take downs he's been doing on Reddit don't apply here.

Untold hours of "busy work" and piles of grinding disks and welding wire etc and all of this foolishness just because Dugg knew better than all those who offered proven methods for setting up a lug rig sail a long time ago.
Yup, this truly is the boat internet volunteers built and which Dugg then fucked up. These videos serve as constant reminders of just how much has been fucked up and why this BSO will never live up to its mission statement.

It is interesting to periodically review his earlier comments pertaining to the simplicity and ease of junk rigging. Also, missed the mark on weight estimate by 30+ tons:

I have always heard of 'jack leg carpenters' but never heard the term Jack Leg applied to a welder. Always a first...

That gaff is truly a thing of wonder! As in, "I wonder what he was thinking?" More welding wire went into that gaff than the pipe extrusion and sheet aluminum! At least he got rid of the SS hose clamps holding the sail to it.

I'm no welding expert... but my understanding is that aluminium is pretty sensitive to the conditions, and I'm not sure that welding outdoors in high humidity, with no pre-heat, is really best practice.

Welding aluminum outdoors is a big no-no unless you have wind screens. Any light breeze blows away the shielding gas. I'm sure Doug knows this. But sadly he is also a moron.

Splitting a pipe to weld in a middle piece of flatbar is nowhere near as stiff as doing this much simpler alternative.

and he had the height to do so under his tractor seat.

Criticizing Doug is like clubbing baby seals. Sure it's fun for a while, but it's so easy that after a bit you get all bloody and feel ashamed of yourself. I think it was Bob Perry's grandmother who said "don't make fun of the afflicted".

So Dugg blows at welding alu outdoors. He also effectively weakens an alu pipe by introducing several yards of worthless welds by splitting a perfectly good pipe in half. If he is going to spend his time ruining things just to fix them with worse Duggsolutions, he may as well have a go at that humongous "pilot house" by lobbing off 2 feet from the port and starboard side to at least provide a safe passageway all the way aft without trotting through the "pilot house". Should be really easy too, as it is made from alu also and Dugg has lots of blades and warire for alu welding. This would then also give him the chance to get rid of those two useless excrescences rudely jutting out from both aft quarters. One day, it will be good to actually see this boat out on some real warter , with all sails up and a fresh sailing breeze.

Yeah agree. Same reason why I generally lay off of one of the PA players unless she insists on dragging me in and why I put two legged on ignore.

Funny about the junk rigging. Other than a square rigger, a junk rig probably has more bits of string per sail than any other rig out there. I still can't figure out how his is going to work, not that I'm losing any sleep trying to work it out.

My rig has aluminium top yards and funnily enough they don't bend the way Doug's do. Because I built mine as specified by the rig designer, who knew more than a little bit about what was needed.

Neither addition of metal solve the lateral bending issue, no?

The bludgeoning was brought on by a quick n' lazy effort to meet "fair-use"... and indeed was messy in hind-sight.

Was stunned but not surprised to see Dugg's solution to the overweight sails... was a herculean effort add another 60lbs of metal aloft. Dugg needs to work on his fear of knots and splicing.

The Junk Rig Association is a venerable affair with vast resources at their finger tips. They are known for their cruelty towards people like Dugg who have this deep and persistent need to re-invent everything, always, and all the time, and manage to continue failing all along despite sage counsel from JRA.
Far better for Dugg to just look at drawings and old photos of junks drifting up the Yangtze river and be inspired thus.
Which brings us to this cockamamie clusterfucking craziness of the present. Pigheaded ego narcissism finally catches up to reality. The results are ugly, the outcomes dangerous and people are wary of how far Dugg will go with his reckless disregard for basics.
