SV Seeker

Wow...thought I strayed into PA for a while there

That was a regular "Tornado" of measurement commentary (see what I did there?)

Question: If a tornado forms in Siberia and no one is there to witness it, did it happen?

Second question: How strong would a tornado have to be in order to give Seeker a ride?

Still seems to be some confusion over capitalisation. Let me help:

The latter is far less powerful but a good deal more precise. Best not to get in the way of either.

The weirdest thing for me (45 yrs in Oz, now 12 yrs in USA, is my own body compass is reversed.

Put a blind fold on me, spin me around maybe 5 times and I can point to North within about 10 degrees.

But in the US, do the same thing, and I feel I am pointing north, but actually am pointing south

I understand being like this when getting a visual location and sense solar declination, but blindfolded?

Any body else have this weird sense?
That's cool, and weird

This might need it's own thread, maybe one that the readership in Oz and New Zealand would be more likely to notice

I have a variant of this; blindfolded or not, if you ask me to tell you which direction something is without providing me navigational tools, I will unfailingly point in the opposite direction.

Given to a smarter man, this gift would be extremely useful.

Not that, but whenever I am on the west coast I am forever confused when I see the ocean, if you are facing the ocean a left turn should be north!

When I left Georgia and moved to California to live with my Dad just as I was entering High School I was so excited at living within walking distance to the Pacific Ocean. First day there I started hiking towards Alamitos Bay from our apartment. I got to the first major street and saw the afternoon sun to my right pointing my way to the West. I took that turn and followed the sun expecting to arrive at the beach. I walked for a couple of hours and couldn't understand where the beach was, just endless boulevard and blinding sun! I finally turned around and retraced the route by which I had come and was worn out by the time I got home late in the afternoon. I looked at a map to confirm that the beach was indeed only about a mile and a half but was due South as the whole Long Beach/Seal Beach area ran East/West. If I hadn't given up on my Westward following of the sun I would have ended up in Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles about 20 miles away...

Nobody working in the metric system would use something with a thickness of 7.95mm. The metric equivalent would be 8mm. 75% of 8mm is 6mm. Even simpler than the fractions.
You don't always get to chose your stock thickness. I guarantee your metric equipment has odd numbers in it, from the depth of the relief cut on threads to the final diameter of a taper to the throat width on a dovetail you just cannot always get perfect round numbers. In SAE we have a system that works incredibly quickly for when we get round numbers and then when we cannot use that system that is unquestionably faster than yours we switch to using the same decimal based system you do. It's like having a two speed transmission. Granted it wouldn't be easy to scale something in decimal inches up to feet since there are 12 inches to a foot (twelve having 2.5 times as many factors as ten) but when was the last time you had to scale something that you needed to know down to the submilimeter level up to multiple meters? I'm not polishing mirrors for space telescopes here.

That is surprising and I do not have that sense. Sounds like a homing pigeon instinct absent in me. It reminds me of perfect pitch in music - I have that and many don't. Out of the clear blue I can correctly sing or hum A 440, no need for electronic aids or a tuning fork. Blindfolded direction? Forget that. Perfect pitch is probably more common. Can you do it when you don't know which way is N before being blindfolded? I'm wondering if other senses such as sound, wind feel, sun orientation are giving you clues.

We are far astray from Dugh bashing. His going dark renders us short on fresh food. Controlling the narrative and hiding the truth are his focus, not sailing the research vessel supported by a charity organization. He likely knows he's fucked as far as sailing accross oceans, and it'll be interesting to see what he comes up with to perpetuate the 501c.

Actually Doug and his research vessel Seeker may be welcome about 50 miles further East. This just in...

Of course Doug may have to add some sponsons to the Seeker as they seem to be a pre-requisite as you can clearly see on the sinking MANTA.
